I have the opportunity to buy a very nice 931, but it needs a clutch disc. The determining factor in this buy is how much I can replace the clutch for. I did some searches and found mention on being able to use a Ford Bronco disc.

Does anybody have a some more info on this?

It is a 1980 931 4 lug.

Why not just use the correct OEM replacement parts

Is it not a worthy replacement?
I thought it was a common practice to avoid the £400 bill...

Typically, when a clutch starts to slip it's time for a new 3 peice clutch kit, pilot bearing and the 2 cutch fork bearings.

If the current owner suspects clutch issues because the gears are grinding then its probably wishful thinking. Given it's a S1 it will have the infamous snailshell gearbox...

If the prospect of spending £400 on wear'n'tear items is a deal breaker then I would suggest the 931 is'nt the machine for you.

The Bronco clutch disc will not financially help much, if at all, if most of the clutch system components are worn beyond sensible re-use.

If I'm not wrong, the 1980 931 used a clutch disk with spring damper. So the Bronko disk may fit well.

I just replaced mine, picked mine up from stoddard for $130.
Seems like a reasonable price, wouldn't stuff around with a ford bronco disc IMO.

Just did some more research on this topic, and apparently, the clutch disc from a 1988-1990 Bronco II 2.9L V6 has the correct 225mm O.D., 25mm I.D., and 23 spline configuration. FWIW, Sachs apparently makes a Heavy Duty version of this clutch disc that might be worth considering. It's important to note that it's a Bronco II, and specifically the 2.9L V6 application, as the non-II Broncos have several different powerplants, and consequently different clutch parts.

Also, FWIW, my reading indicated that there might be some minor but not insurmountable filing required to get the Bronco disc splines to fit on the 931 driveshaft.

The Sachs part mentioned is SD1041 and SD1041HD. In my limited searching this morning, I've not had a lot of success finding these individually. The Sachs clutch kit listed in the official Sachs interchange for this application is K0047-06 and K0047-06HD, usually selling for a little under the $200 mark. However, I've not seen any info that would indicate that the pressure plate and throw-out bearing will work for our cars.

I just put the Bronco disc in. No filing. Slipped in place like the original. I had around 45000 miles on it when I sold the car.

How did the Bronco disc work for you? Which one did you use (as Dan notes, there is an HD version)?

FWIW, ThePartsBin.com shows Sachs prices as follows:

Standard: $28.73
HD: $51.30

Also, the Sachs 931 disc (listing an ID 1/32 larger than the Bronco part. . .could account for "filing" stories) lists for $337.43.

I used 1987 Bronco II clutch disk from Autozone #CP31035 for $31.99 with no problem.

That's interesting!
I was reading that you had to modify the Bronco clutch for it to work but if you slipped it straight in... interesting, very interesting!

Thanks to bcblase for pointing out Autopartswarehouse.com!

I ran a search on my car for clutch parts, and came up with the first non-Sachs generic clutch parts I have ever seen, as well as an interesting puck style disc from Sachs.

CLICKY!
