I don't really like it. I was hoping they would unveil a new 4 cylinder model... a modernized 944 would have been much more interesting to me. This looks too much like ALL the other modern "supercars".

Not to mention that the obsession with more and more hp has just gotten REALLY long in the tooth. We are way beyond the point of usable and safe power outputs, it'd be nice to pull down the huge expectations we have of MORE, MOR, MORE and do more with less again. With gas prices where they are, and fears of global climate change becoming a reality, even car companies like Porsche ought to be downsizing engines and cars not making them bigger. Wow... its soooo light... only 3280lbs.

I do tend to agree. The cars that really interest me are the classics: sprite, TR4/6 Spitfire. The only newer cars that even slightly interest me are the suzuki cappuchino, and the lotus elise.

As you can see, apart from the TR6, I'm a fan of light weight chuckability over pure grunt.

The porsche was just a more practical car I could still enjoy chucking through some corners.

Then again, a little extra torque never hurts

A Boxster is about 3200lbs. A Cayman a couple of hundred pounds lighter than that. OK, that's 20 - 25% heavier than a toofah. But given the improved levels of performance, luxury and safety, I reckon it's not too bad.

Lotus builds their Elise, if you're after a go-kart with a motorcycle engine...

There's always 356 replicas and Lotus Seven clones (Locost, Westfield, Caterham, etc). Plus various other Kit manufacturers (Ginetta, Factory Five, etc)

somewhere in there is the lightweight sportscar you want. Otherwise, thanks to the safety nonsense that have to have in the cars these days, the lightweight car is becoming a thing of the past, so to counteract that weight, more power is needed (which also a great selling point for the uninformed consumer)

Show me another 500 hp V8 sports car with 4WD that weighs less. Let alone the weight of a liquid cooled battery and 2 electric motors making 218 hp.

The base Boxster has a bit more than two times the power of a 924, with fuel consumption all but equal to a 924 Turbo. It'll be doing about 100mph while the toofah is struggling to hit sixty. And it'll go about fifty mph faster. And I haven't even started on the Cayman yet...

and your point is? Twice the power and better efficiency should be a given after so many years. Lets face it, the 924 used an archaic fuel injection system and an archaic engine design. At the time it was cheap and available.

Just look at what Honda and Toyota are able to get from smaller motors these days. The addition of variable intake systems, variable valve lift and/or variable cam timing systems helps broaden the power curve which is always a good thing and allows for more finite control of the combustion events, which is also important for emissions and/or efficiency.

I'm happy with older cars as there is a lot of simplicity that makes working on them almost zen like. However, I also understand that they have their limitations and that advancements in technology means that newer cars will almost always have advantages.
