Hey All -

Couple things. My 931 doesn't have an air cleaner box. I just put a air filter on it and claped it on. I understand from other threads that the boxes were somewhat restrictive and didn't allow the best air flow. But the way I got it now is pretty micky-mouse and I'm a lil concerned that somehow condensation and what not might get into the works and make a mess.

Whew - anyway, anyone know where I can get a good used complete (straps etc.) air box. I've seen em on Ebay but I've gotten burned several times cuz it wasn't the right part, blah, blah. Are the boxes different from the 924's?

Hit me up thanks.

The other things is I'm going to need to replace my catalytic converter. The 391 units are pretty expensive anyone ever find one for less that $395 - which is the cheapest I've found.

931 airboxes are way different from the 924na. There are some pics of it on my www below, but they're all partial pics - no good views of the whole airbox.

Last I checked (quite a while ago), the best price for a 931 cat was ~$800 and it was $1200 from a Porsche dealership. That makes $395 look pretty good. I wonder what you get for that... the OE cat had a metal substrate - that is, the palladium and rhodium or whatever was deposited on a metal substrate. More commonly, cats use beads or a ceramic substrate.

Hey Smoothie. Thanks for the info man. Figured the boxes were difft. Checked out your photos. Where'd you find those straps - haven't seen em like that before. Would this one work? It's on ebay right now. Doesn't have straps but prob can pick those up for not a lot.

As for the Cat - here's what I found:

or

If it's 800 smakers I'm outta the game. I'm at or very near my threshold for financial punishment.

That's the right box, and at $10, it's a good deal. The straps are sort of expensive, and several of us have come up with non-standard approaches, some elegant, some not-so-elegant:

I've seen these two part numbers referenced as OEM replacements: 928.110.363.01 or 911.110.365.01

Awesome CMX. I'll bid for it then. Thanks -- as for the straps haha well they seemed to work! Seen new ones on the web, me thinks probably cost well more than the air box will.

Hey numbbers - it's falling apart - literally disintegrating. I want to take care of it before bits of it get into the exhaust and cause problems.

As for the straps Cy and Docs sells them. Look them up on the net. Cheap enough.

xm, if it is just disintegrating on the inside, do what I did. I pulled the cat, and took a long metal rod, and knocked all of the stuff loose on the inside, and dumped it out of the pipe. It took a while, but you end up with a good free flow exhaust. My '80 still passes emissions fine, and as you can tell, I am in the metro area, so it is the same test. Next year, you can get historic car plates, and you won't have to worry about emissions again. Then, you can just take out the cat and have a straight pipe welded in to replace it.

Of course I've never done this before, but you can just take off the pipe behind the cat, leave the cat up there, take the rod as mentioned earlier, smash up the ceramic substrate, start the car, and blow all the crushed stuff out the back of the pipe onto the floor.

Just be sure the garage door is open
