I've read thru the various threads on motor gasket sealant. What type of sealant is recommended for the oil pickup tube to the block? My initial thought is Permatex #2, maybe with a little of Rasta's brake cleaner to thin it. It definitely needs to be air tight.

Hylomar Aerograde gasket maker. Absolutely cannot be beat.

Yeah, Hylomar would be very appropriate for that... though I seem to recall it's just a paper gasket? Or am I wrong?

With the paper gaskets, I just find pre-soaking them in oil is ideal; they swell up nicely, no leaks, and can be removed and reassembled without complaint - ideal for cam cover and intake, which definitely are paper. Obviously that's not a useful characteristic for the pickup tube...

The pickup tube gasket looks like paper to me. I ordered some Hylomar M today and will use it on there, the oil pump and the distributor to head housing. Probably oil soak for many of the rest. I'll use the Hondabond/Permatex and RTV on the pan gasket. I haven't pulled that mess out of the package yet so I'm a little unclear on that one yet.

When you use the Hylomar don't forget to let it skin over nicely before mating the surfaces...

For pan gasket - yeah, either Hondabond, or even better (thicker consistency) the Elring brand Dirko RTV (I wouldn't bother trying Permatex or similar normal RTV).

For reference, here's the Elring Dirko:

I've never found anything that worked as well... used to be orange, looks like it's grey now... just like Hondabond... LOL

Hmmm, interesting to see both gasket manufacturers making such products! Maybe they know their gaskets need help...

I found one small part of the gasket problem. I picked up the small aluminum water outlet casting from the back of the head that was totally gobbed up with some orange/red RTV from a PO. After scraping it off, it obviously had a problem. I got out 90% of the warp by putting a sheet of 220 grit wet and dry paper on my table saw plate and resurfacing it in a figure eight motion. That is the way we used to lap old time steel air compressor valves that needed a perfectly flat surface after finish grinding on a surface grinder. This heat caused distortion is probably a common problem with many of these old parts, unfortunately not this easy to fix for most of the parts.

Found both the Elring Dirko and Curil(Rasta's famous Gorilla Snot) at Autohausz AZ.
