So I pull into the garage tonight, and put it in neutral. Wiggle the stick a little just to be sure....and something comes apart!! It's like the stick is attached to nothing now! Any thoughts? |

My first thought is that you're lucky it happened in your garage. Pull the shift knob & boot up and see if its attached to the shaft. There's a c clip that holds it on. There are two bolts in the rear of the car to check for as well. One attaches the shift shaft to the linkage, the other mounts the linkage to the trans. Those are the most common reasons. |

^this. My friend had this happen to him on the road in his 944 and I had to fix it for him. The c-clip simply gave up and just disappeared. _________________ 924, 82, 5 speed, dark red, 500 dollar special.

ok, lifted the boot up, and there was a pin welded to the shift lever that was attached to the rod that goes to the transmission. the pin broke off of the shift lever. guess McGuiver is going to have to come up with something! |

The pin is welded from the factory. The fact that it ripped off is amazing to me, can you post a picture? _________________ 924, 82, 5 speed, dark red, 500 dollar special.

I probably could, if I could figure how....sigh....( I mean I'm sure I could figure it out if I put my mind to it. I guess what I'm saying is that I am lazy! ) that being said, I already drilled it out and put a bolt in to replace it. I went out to the parts car, and it was broke off as well. someone had replaced it with a pin with a cotter key keeper. So I figured that I could run a bolt in it with some Loctite on the threads and try that for a while. @ Stephan: It would probably be a good Idea to accept your generous offer! I am confident that I will at least be able to make the Saturday night/sunday activities in Portland, so I will grab it then. Thank you! |

| when I put it back together, I noticed that the stick moved at a different angle than the rod that it is attached to. It looked like it had been cracked for a while, and metal fatigue took care of the rest of it recently. I have been careful not to shift too quickly. also, have been pausing in neutral as I progress through the gears. The car seems to shift smoothly, although sometimes you have to push hard to get it into first. I have noticed when it is hard to get into first, if you let up on the clutch, and depress it again: It goes right in. |
