I am getting ready to drop my old transaxle out of the car. I was wondering how much clearance is needed to remove the transaxle without difficulty. Currently there are about 17 7/8" inches between the bottom of the transaxle & my garage floor. Thanks! _________________ 1982 924

You need enough to be able to crawl under there and remove the tranny bolts. Do the coupler first, slide it back, the tranny/bellhousing bolts, then the two holding it to the frame/body. Oh, and disconnect the shift rod somewhere along the line! _________________ '83 944 Track car.

Where is the coupler? I have the shift rod done & the axle shafts are ready to come out. _________________ 1982 924

Ok, cool. So the coupler is the same thing as the clamping sleeve connecting to the driveshaft accessed through the inspection hole. Thanks guys! I also understand it is important to slide it TOWARDS THE TRANSAXLE instead of the other way around. _________________ 1982 924

Thanks for your help guys. I got the clamping sleeve off the driveshaft and the axle shafts are removed; it seemed like it would be easier just to take them all the way out in the long run. Finally I decided to drain the oil: there was the appearance of something akin to liquid metal in the gear oil and the "spak, spak" sound of metal pieces falling out into the drain pan... Now all that is left is to actually remove the transaxle! _________________ 1982 924
