I know you're all having trouble sleeping worrying about the fate of the discussion board and you might have noticed that I put my hand up to set up a couple of alternatives.

What I would like to know is what works for you guys individually.

Who likes/hates the Rennlist format? I'm talking format here, not Rennlist itself. And the first guy who says the smileys will get flamed mercilessly by Lars.

What about features?

Do you think that being able to add pictures of your cars, engines, new parts, pets etc would enhance the knowlege transfer?

How about multiple boards? Say one for "real" questions, one for questions about fitting big-block Chev's etc into 924s and one for the origin of the 924 engine (guess who get to admin. that one).

I like the "balls-out" format of the 924.org (as opposed to the Rennlist) board, where all message headers are displayed, because I can quickly scroll through it and see what's new. It also helps that I have a cable connection so it loads quickly. I remember back in the old days (before many of you were born) when I had a 56K dial-up connection and the board was not as much fun to load. Perhaps a Rennlist-style "one line per thread" format with a "just give me everything" button?

What about the option of logging on when posting? I'm thinking, something like you don't have to log in but if you don't we flag the post with a "this post is quite possibly from 'Lars from the frozen north' but we know that Lars has a logon ID so this might be from one of his alternate personalities" compared to "looks like someone's stolen Lars's password again".

I know most of you guys are enjoying summer up there but if you could take a moment to to think about what works for you then perhaps we can build something that works for you.

Give me any URLs of other discussion boards that you love the format of. Don't worry, if you say that you love the way that www.wildsexwithsmallanimals.com works, I won't tell your moms. Actually, it does have a great format ;-)

Oh, and if you love using Rennlist, that's cool too, say so.

Peter, one thing I really like about this board is the way the replies are listed directly below the main topic heading. (Such as the one directly below this topic.) It's easy to see the responses to each topic with out having to scroll down through past replies. You can select the replies you haven't read yet. Simple, quick and easy. Unless I'm missing it (probably), you can't do that on the rennlist board. You can't tell if new replies have been posted unless you remember from the previous day how many replies there were to each topic. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I like the way that the latest posted/active threads are always at the top of the list. Check out the Improved Touring boards are set up (www.improvedtouring.com) - they have an indicator (the lightbub) that shows up next to boards and threads that have had new posts/new threads since you last visited, so you can tell where the new posts are - yes, I agree, saves a lot of time. BTW, that's also an infopop board, same SW as rennlist.

I also like how, on rennlist, you can a) post pics, and b) upload pics to post if you don't have a website to link to.

I do like the fact that everybody has to register, but at no charge - keeps authentication and flaming handled.

I like the fact that the format is "nested", not showing all messages at once, as it dramatically reduces the time to download each section. It also helps you find new posts.

I hate how long this board's server takes to handle new posts!!! :)

The only good format aspect of this board is the ability to see all replies.

I like authenticated postings, capability to add pictures and HTML to the message, and a choice of viewing all messages or only topics. I also like boards that use cookies like UBB at Rennlist and others so I only have to enter my username and password once.

Peter: Here is some free software that looked nice. http://www.discusware.com Go to the Demos section. The more advanced version costs some bucks.

Who likes/hates the Rennlist format?

I like the format. I like smileys. Flame at will. I especially like the smileys at www.streetracing.org - they are far superior to any smileys on any board on the planet.

What about features? Do you think that being able to add pictures of your cars, engines, new parts, pets etc would enhance the knowlege transfer?

Yes.

How about multiple boards? Say one for "real" questions, one for questions about fitting big-block Chev's etc into 924s and one for the origin of the 924 engine (guess who get to admin. that one).

Yes.

Perhaps a Rennlist-style "one line per thread" format with a "just give me everything" button?

Yes

What about the option of logging on when posting?

Why log on? I don't understand the security advantage as anyone can make some absurd identity and run with it.

Hi rick,

I hear that many "computer" boards have nice smileys but the last time asked about my clutch cable at ithinkmycomputerisarealperson.com they laughed!

go figure

Cheers

OK, I think I can see a pattern emerging here.

Looks like most people like the Rennlist "extras" - the smilies, being able to include pictures, that sort of stuff.

The ability to expand all the posts if you want to, so you can see all the replies without having to click on the original post sounds good.

I like the idea of having the threads displayed with the ones containing the most recent replies are at the top of the list.

My favourite other board that has a lot of this stuff is http://www.autospeed.com/ if you want to take a look, the jumps to the discussion forums are near the top of the window.

Give me a couple of days to look for something we can use and get it installed on one of our test servers so everyone can have a look. I will also have a think about how we can load the posts from this software into whatever replaces it so all the wisdom and entertainment isn't lost.

If you have any more ideas about what would be great, post them.

Vaughan,

are there any backups of the theads that have been removed from this board?

Peter,
First I have to say that the Rennlist format is better for those of us who have Macs. I also use SAABnet and they have a format that works really well and shows all the headers. They have a place in the osting frame where you can include URLs and all the neccessary additions. I don't know if the system is "Owned" by Saabnet. all I know is it works well on my Mac. I even like the smileys. Apologies to Lars.

My opinion,

Jim Short
