My older brother is looking for a 944. But there is a few kickers....
First off, he knows nothing about cars other than where to put gas and how to call someone to fix something. So basically he's looking for one that needs NOTHING done to it. I did explain to him about the normal services that need to be done and of course his response was, "well that's why I have you". So obviously he is not mechanically inclined at all.

So my question is, does anyone know of a 944 in great shape for sale in the Michigan area? Price really isn't a huge concern to him as he was looking at an 87 for around $10,000 and almost bought it til I told him to hold off til I asked around here. Any help is appreciated.

Lots of internet places to look, for example, Jaxed.com. Also, Pelican for sale section, there's a sweet '95 968 in NE.

A really nice 8v 944 won't fetch more than $5000 so its good he didn't pay 10K for one.

That said, if he has a 10K budget he ought to buy a 911SC or add another 5K and go for a 911 3.2 Carrera.

I try to discourage anyone who doesn't do their own repairs from buying a 944. Even if it's in perfect condition (which they never are), preventive maintenance is ridiculously expensive if done by a competent shop.

On the other hand, if you do your own work, or are willing to learn, a 944 can be quite economical to run. That is, if you find one that hasn't been neglected because of the cost to maintain.

I agree with Nein37, if he has $10k to spend, a decent 911SC would probably be a better choice. They're pretty much bullet-proof with a couple of fairly simple updates. Plus, it's a real Porsche.

Ten grand? Cripes, that is an excellent condition 951.

If he gets the SC, he can get whipped by my 931.

Thanks for the replies. He did say that he would like a mid 80's 911 if he could find one. And if he's ok with spending $10k I may push him to look for one. If he's dead set on a 944, are there better years than others? I really don't know as much about the 44's compared to the 24's.

totally agreed on the 911sc due to maintenance and ease of driving.

Also agreed on the 944 maintenance costs and not DIY since it'll creep up on ya in costs, even with DIY it can be a pain sometimes.
