Beating it onto the torque tube will work. Whatever gets it out of the way.

You can use a floor jack. The tranny balances just behind the diff - to the rear of the tranny mounts, and all you have to do is stop it tilting and falling off the jack. I set up wood blocks to catch it just in case.

Don't saw a hole in your car.

hey dont even think of cutting that car !!

put the tranny back up...in its normal position...even bolt it back on. Then use some sort of fork like Dan said and force the coupler further back....try and try and try...it was designed to be unmounted this way so it must be possible. I'll do the same job soon as i have to replace a syncro in my gearbox.

Safest way is with a trans jack, which you might be able to rent (you can around here). I've done it multiple times without one using a piece of plywood (3/4" would be good) on top of a standard floor jack, along with an extra jack stand or two to help support it in a few strategic places. For example, put a jack stand up underneath the end of the trans where it attaches to the torque tube, then lower the heavy end with your jack. Eventually, you'll need to get the jack out from underneath the trans, and this can be a bit precarious, but I have yet to have one land on me or smash a finger or anything. Make sure you have plenty of uncluttered space around and behind you so you can maneuver quickly out of the way if necessary.

well I looked all over and I can't find a trans jack.

I'm buying a 1700 pound utility jack, made for lifting motorcycles / atvs.

looks like it should work because it has two long arms that can hold the trans.

the trans doesn't look that heavy but obviously I don't wan ti falling on me.

are you guys sure that the trans will clear if I push the coupler towards the torque tube? once I push it towards the torque tube I might not be able to push it back because the flange that i use to push on would be too far back.

teh trans can only be slid back like half an inch.

also I know my trans mount is different. I have a late 944 with one tran mount on top. Clarks garage says to drop the trans with the crossmember but it looks easier to disconnect the mount because to drop the crossmember I have to remove my fuel filter and fuel lines look like they might get damaged if I'm not careful so I''d rather drop it by the mount.

also not sure if my shifter tube will slide out easily once I move the trans back. if not that'll be another problem.

A little experimentation will give you your answers faster than logging on here.

The tube will take care of itself when you lower the tranny. Mine did.

Tim has come a long way in a short time, it seems like yesterday that it took a hundred posts to get his car up on jack stands.

lol.

anyways the trans now won't clear that freakin coupler. I slid it onto the tq tube side as it wouldn't go on the trans side. no the trans is fully disconnected and strapped onto a atv jack and when I lower it it won't come out of the coupler as it's still a couple of cm in there fk!

also seems like I was wrong the tq tube is infact stripped or the teeth are rounded off.

now i definately don't have the time to drop the rear suspension to take the tq tube out. I'm either going to have to pay a shop to take the tq tube out for me and put a new one in or I'll have to do a short cut.

now if I cut the rear tire area off would the tq tube slide out without dropping the rear crossmember?

The rear suspension is easily removed.

So, basically you've never done this before, read documentation written by someone who has done this before and you think you can skip their steps? Even better you're talking about cutting up your trunk instead of removing a few clamps, hoses and two bolts? C'mon, stop screwing around. You're making great progress, just follow the instructions and get it done.

You need to remove the Transaxle support crossmember and fuel lines. Fuel lines and filters are meant to be replaced and are cheap insurance, so don't worry about them.

Once you get the transaxle out, use a very small file and very carefully clean up the splines on the TT, the transaxle and the new coupler. Go slowly and check the fit of the coupler on the pieces. You don't want it too loose. A little lubricant will help them slide together. Be careful as too much can attract dirt and cause premature wear.

Finally, pictures help when trying to troubleshoot remotely.

well maybe "easily" but I don't have another 20 hours to work on it.

a porsche shop quoted me at 14 hours to replace the torque tube so if it takes them 14 hours it'll take me a 100 hours.

also if you drop the rear suspension how would you support the car on jackstands?

my rear end is uspported by the rear crossmember tube ends.
