I picked up a 1981 924 in december and am now in the process of getting it ready for summer. Before removing the timing belt I noticed that if the timing mark on the crankshaft gear lines up with the alignment marker on the oilpump, the timing mark on the camshaft gear points straight up instead of lining up with the marker on the camshaft pointer. Should not both gears be lined up with their respective marks/pointers ?
Any comments are appreciated. Thanx.

One would think, but check the timing mark on the flywheel just to make sure everything is lined up correctly. Also double check that #1 is at TDC.

Someone might have advanced or retarded the camshaft phasing with respect to TDC. If one advances the cam timing he in theory, gain torque and lose top end and retarding the cam timing does the opposite. The previous owner might of done that without buying an adjustable timing gear. If I were to adjust that with the stock gear I would want to move it more than 4 degrees in either direction. I at this very moment don't know how many teeth are on the gear but it would have to be 90 or more to be at 4 degrees per tooth to shift the belt or more than 90 teeth to move it less than 4 degrees. Also this practice at least on a 924 has one problem....the cam gear is hooked up to the distributor and any cam phasing (timing) change will affect your ignition timing usually negating the cam phase power change one tried to make.

I would NOT want to move the cam phasing more than 4 degrees either way!! Sorry the grammer and typing suffered.....
