I am seriously considering buying an 88 924S Parts Car in Texas, but would need it transported to SoCal.

If you are coming this way from TX, and happen to have space to transport a non-running car, I will pay a reasonable fee.

I may have to rent a truck and trailer, and go get the car myself if I buy it. If so, I would be willing to move a car from SoCal to TX to help defray the cost of the gas, truck and trailer rental.

If you need parts for a 924S or 944, and want to come get them off the car while I am still in TX somewhere, I will make you a deal, since I am only looking for the engine, and electronics.

The car had an engine fire (leaking fuel injection hose?), and the damage was limited primarily to the underhood fuel and electrical with paint and possibly sheet metal damage to the hood and left front fender. The left front tire was damaged, but the wheel is still good.

Contact me privately (I am not giving the parts away. I figure renting the truck, trailer, and gas will cost over $1000), or directly if you have transport or need transport, or need or may be interested in parts.

I haven't bought the car yet, since I need to find an economical way to transport it.

The car looks good from the firewall back.

It does look like the fire under the hood did a number on the components under the hood. A couple of years ago, I rebuilt an 89 VW Jetta that had a similar incident (not quite as bad), and a good friend has driven that car 200K miles in the pas few years. I am in the process of replacing the worn-out automatic tranny in that car right now. The only stuff I am looking to salvage from under the hood of the parts car is the short block. If the cylinder head is still good, that would be a bonus. I don't really need the cam tower (already have about 3 laying around).

It's too bad the front seats were stolen. The dashboard looks like it is still intact (not burned). The Seller doesn't live where the car is, and he is supposed to check to make sure the car is still intact, and verify the mileage on the speedo.

This is a marginal deal, and I figure if I have to rent a truck and transpo myself, after selling the tranny, drive tube, brakes, wheels, I will still owe some money of the transpo, and be out the cost of the car. And that is if I can get someone to drive straight through with me to save on rental costs (I figure 30 hours driving time, and would aim for a two day rental).

I am also looking at a 86 944 with broken belts. The car's exterior looks great in photos, but I haven't seen it in person yet. It smells like a classic deferred maintenance belt failure. The Seller wrote in his ad that it needs minor engine work. I've emailed him a couple of times, and at first he said he thought it just needed a head gasket, then later he admitted that it no-longer starts and runs. It less than 40 miles from here. Seller wants me to drive down and take a look, but I am not going to until he agrees to sell at the price I am willing to pay after I inspect it. The only problem I can see is that the car doesn't have the engine I want.

I bought a spare head this past week, and was planning on pulling the head from the ruined block on my 924S to make sure that it can be salvaged to be reinstalled on the block that I am building for the 924S. Since I have a spare now (with bent valves) I need to decide which head to use. I have heard that there are two different cylinder head castings and the late one is the better one. So, I am hoping that the head from the original engine is salvagable.

Thanks, Hillside is about 30 minutes drive from here and I troll for VW and Ford parts there.

Porsches get stripped there pretty quickly. How long ago did you see the car there?

What I am really looking for is the higher compression 87 or 88 944 block. An 86 944 has the same lower compression pistons as the 87 924S. Still if it look good I might take it anyway. You really can't go wrong for $100.

Why not just call an auto transport broker and have them hunt down a trucking company for transport? Door-to-door service and cheaper. TX to CA is a common route.

Commercial Shipping Rates are roughly double for non-running cars, and door to door service adds another 25%.

I have purchased two out of state cars. One came from NJ, and the other from TX. The NJ car was delivered by commercial carrier, door to door, and took close to two calendar weeks to deliver. The cost was around $850. The transmission on this car barely worked, and if it was completely dead, transporting it would have cost my $1600-$1800.

A private party carried the other car (which was a non-running parts car) from TX. Mine was the third car carried on the haul, and it filled the trailer for the carrier. The car arrived in two days, and cost me $200.

Clearly the private transport from TX worked out better.
