I wanna paint them flat black, but I don't know what the best kind of paint would be to use, or what kind of prep I need to do. Has anyone ever done this?

The rear stone guards are not painted.
They are a semi-gloss black when new.
Clean them with a non-petroleum based cleaner, and then treat with a non-sticky conditioner like "Black Again' (if it is still available). |

You talking about the rubber flaps?
Vinyl spray works excellent on rubber too. Just a good clean first.
Magic stuff in a spray can!

Thanks for the help, I'm not sure why but when I got this car, the guards look like they are red but they kinda have a black tint to them, it's kinda hard to explain, I wish I had a pic, maybe I can get one for you guys, but tha's why I was wondering, because it just looks like the black is fading or rubbing off or something.

Yeah those do look good painted, Cedric, the only thing is mine are the ones that go on the other side of the wheel and are glued against the body. I'll see if I can get some pics.

Roll on bed liner works nicely too - I have the lower rocker panels done and its just enough out of site but very functional for road tar and other crap you pick up.
(look closely)

Ok if I can get these pics to work I'll show you all what I mean... remember this is on a 944.
Thats a really good idea though skemcin.

Yeah ouch, peel those off and bring 'em down to the Antiques Road Show when they come to town. Tell them they were civil war era placemats.
When new, they're clear stick-on pieces ($39.95 each side these days).
I'd sand, and mask 'em and maybe coat with a spray-on plastic bedliner - kind of like what Skemcin did, but it's available in aerosol can form from NAPA and other places. -This should fill in the cracks and coat in one step. Otherwise, sand and fill the cracks with glazing putty, then sand again and paint.. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."

given the pics - I think masking, pealing, sanding, and bed liner (spray or roll) is the best idea.
good luck. _________________ 924.org (no time to complete)

7osh | yeah, pictures and a description will do nice for the new site (see signature). It might be good to mask before you peel off those things. That might be stating the obvious but you should be able to get a good smooth masking applied with the way it looks - it'll keep you from having to free hand it later. _________________ 924.org (no time to complete)

Would it be a bad idea to just mask and then use that spray on liner over top of the guards that are already on there?
Hey man, I like what you've done with the new site, it's looking pretty sweet.
