|
|
Well, I ran out of fuel this morning!
I normally run my car for a few hundred kliks before filling up... say, half-empty.
This time I figured I'd run it a little longer and see how far she'd get. Now I know... 530km's. I've been a little heavier on the throttle lately, so it might run closer to 600km's on a highway cruise.
I've been checking my fuel economy and she's been running anywhere between about 22 and 25mpg (~9.5 - 10.5 litres/100km's). So she's spot-on there.
Anyways, I've definitely not got an 85-litre tank! I can't remember the two tank sizes but it certainly isn't the big one.
My question is, can anyone confirm whether all Australian-delivered 924 Turbos came with the larger tank? Is it likely mine has been swapped out for a smaller one? _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

It might have been swapped out with a Non Turbo tank. Fairly easy to check by sticking your head under the car. The turbo tank fills up the area around the back of the gearbox, whereas if you've a non turbo tankl (like my GT has at the moment) there's a large gap between the back of the gearbox and the front of the tank _________________ Remember a Porsche is not just for Christmas,

924(NA) - "approx. 62 liters, of which 5 liters reserve"

Well, there's one advantage with turbo charging the NA then - mine gets 28mpg _________________ Andrew

Andrew if you are getting 28 mpg you are not driving fast enough mate .

Don't worry, that's around town not in competition!!
Unfortunately I think my engines life would end at 15psi _________________ Andrew

Thanks Smoothie. It's in the Owners Manual I have but I just didn't have it on me and couldn't remember the sizes.

Thanks john h, I'll check it out but I don't think there's any doubt I've got the smaller tank!
Anyone know the size of the 944 tank? Are they the same as either the NA 924 or 924 Turbo tank? (i.e. is it just bolt-in?)
Possible it's been swapped for a 944 tank?
Don't really care either way. Just wondering is all... _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

(44 tank isn't a straight swap. You'll really have to deform your spare wheel well to get one of those heavy buggers in....as I discovered, you would be better off replacing with a light alloy version in my uneducated opinion.....as I am about to do.....also dependent on model possibly, the 944 tank does not have an integral fuel pump(well not the one I got anyway) _________________ '24 turbo with dodgy gt bodykit......needs a new home |

What size gallons are you guys using?
I've worked out that my NA gets around 20 mpg, but that's with a 3.79 litre gallon. That works out to around 24 mpg if you use the UK gallon, which is 4.55 litres in size. Either way it's a fair bit worse than what you're getting. It looks like Khal was using the US gallon size for his mileage, and I should be getting better than that.
This article makes it sound as though 20 mpg for a NA is about right. What's up? _________________ 78 924 NA

It should get 25+ on the highway fairly easily. . .the drag coefficient of the 24 is uber low. . . _________________ Toofah King Bad

I have the ROW 924 turbo and I'm sure that my fuel tank is only ~62litres as I normally top up ~50L when the reserve light comes on. They must have different tanks for different regions.
I've also experienced running out of petrol... hope you weren't too far from civilization! I learnt that day not to test how far you can go while on a date! |

It's the most slippery car I've driven, but the best mileage I can get on my commute is around 28 mpg with a beater 1.4 litre Hyundai Pony. That's a 5 speed as well, while the '78 twofer has the Audi 4 speed.
I like to think I drive in a fuel efficient manner, but my calculations encompass my entire commute, which involves at least a dozen red lights, and about 75% of the distance with a speed limit of 80 - 90 km/h (that's 50 - 55 mph), and a distance of around 35 km each way (or around 20 miles each way).
So, is my mileage this poor because I'm running rich, or is there something else going on (like driving conditions)? _________________ 78 924 NA

Is your exhaust tip sooty? It's probably worth checking your control pressure. . .I'm sure someone up in Vancouver has a CIS tester you can use. _________________ Toofah King Bad

Yep, definately sooty. I figure it's better to run on the rich side than the lean side though.
I've been wanting to check the pressures (before touching the mixture of course) for a while, but haven't gotten a pressure tester or anything like that yet. At over a hundred bucks for a round trip off this rock (via the ferry, not fairy!), meeting up with Min or Lizard in Vancouver (or maybe even Kendog) just for a pressure check is kind of pricey. _________________ 78 924 NA

My coefficient is much higher I would imagine. |
