As for Euro 924 NA 1/4 mile times, check this site and look for place number 38: http://www.ss.ee/speedest/spd_00.shtml
It's NA with only 5speed Audi-type gearbox fitted from 82 NA, that's it. Pretty impressive, I'd say. _________________ '83 924 2.6 16v Turbo, 470hp

I think i was in the same boat two months ago, except i was weighing the 924 v. the 914 (the car no one talks about ..hmmmm..) .. so i won't repeat what's already been well said by those with much more experience.
I've got a stock '82 and she gets 110hp. The only time i get frustrated with the hp is going up mountains and long grades.. but it's the coming down the mountain part that really makes it fun. The car is so low, so tight, and so aerodynamic you feel like you're on rails. And the turning.. oh that's the best part. Ever take a square-t at 35 mph? you will
Yes, she won't drag off the line. But who drives in a line anyway? Just learn how to work your gears and you'll catch up. Besides, most speed junkies are so bent on hp they never learn how to actually take turns and still have physics be their friend. That's where the 924 smokes.. consider how low it sits, it's 50/50 weight distribution, and the best suspension in it's class... and that's all stock.. you'll spend well over $1G+ easy trying to mimic what the 924 was born with.
If you want to learn how to really drive and drive well, get a 924. consider it an intro to handling.
if you really need a daily.. don't get it, especially if you're job would be at risk. I take the train to work while my car sleeps. When the weekend hits, I'm all over Hwy. 1 and up in the Santa Cruz Mountains.
So far I've had to replace the alternator.. that was $239 parts and about as much for labor. I paid $1700 for the car, which I think was fare. It's got 187k miles but she's still really tight. My mechanic even said "yeah, she's a good car.. good runner". I think I can figure out the little stuff.. but find yourself a mechanic you can trust and build a relationship with.. that will save most of your maintenance costs there!
As far as the 944, IMHO.. much more expensive to buy and maintain for marginally better performance/speed. Personally, I think they're too much to deal with for the cost and require even more attention, especially if you go turbo. I can think of 20 better places i'd put $5k.
Oh and one more thing.. make sure you run an extra ground wire.. I’ve been all over these posts and that seems to be the “put a little butter on it” fix that solves miracles _________________ Porsche 924 - 1982 - Northern Cali |
