Changed the transmission oil on the weekend and replaced it with the correct SAE 80 like the book tells me and it is really loud. I get an angry sounding whine on accelleration and decelleration it seems ok at cruising.
The old oil was a grey colour instead of black so I am thinking it had one of those teflon additives in it from the previous owner. Is it saveable? I nee dto make a 1000km trip this weekend and dont want to lose a transmission halfway there. |

Sure it wasn't grey from all the metal in it..?
I'm certainly no expert but it sure sounds like the trans is worn. Could be that the previous owner had some slightly "better" oil in there. Seems possible to me that changing to "normal" oil could cause the trans to whine. I'm sure, much like engine oil, that the new formulations are light-years ahead of the original recommended trans oils.
I'm sure someone here will be able to recommend a suitable replacement oil that might help with problem.
On the other hand, if it's really making that much noise, I'd say there's a good chance it's on its last legs... _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

I want to change my transmission fluid soon so I also want to know what the best transmission oil for the 924 is.
hopefully mine won't be full of metal....
does the manul transmission only need new oil or does it also have a filter or something else that should be replaced. _________________ 78 924 sold.

There isn't any filter that you need to replace.
Just make sure to take the tapping plug (top one) out first, so you don't get stuck with a tranny with no oil if you can't get it out.
If you're filling it while it's in the car, you're going to need some tube to feed the oil in, since it's pretty cramped in there.
There is a magnet inside the transmission which is supposed to pick up the shavings that floats around in the oil, if you ever have the transmission open, you can try to clean it if it's very gunked down, but don't worry about that now.
(This information applies to the 016 type Audi transmissions.) |

Interesting reading this thread, as I am about to change transmission oil too.
I always thought that the Teflon additive bonds itself to metal parts, so is not affected by changing the oil later on.
I have done approx. 130.000km and (touch wood) all is quiet out back.
I will be renewing with what the factory recommends i.e. SAE 90 GL5. My thinking is similar to the engine oils. the engine was not designed to use synthetic and the I think thesame applies to the gearbox. I suspect without being an expert on the subject of gearboxes, that thinner synthetic oil, is likely to be noisier as the internal tolerances will be less.
I think it is logical to say though, that using SAE90 and living in a cold climate would probably be noisier than say a 75W90. It rarely drops below 50degrees Fahrenheit here in Athens during the winter and I have not noticed any increase in noise.

Was it making noise before you changed it?
Did you fill it with the car level and until oil ran out of the filler hole? |

| Nowhere near as much noise before I changed it. The car was tilted the other way so if anything it got about 200mL too much oil. I think it might be the synthetic oil is too thin if the other posts are anything to go by. I'll try a dino oil if that doesnt work pump it full of teflon until I have the time to take it off the road and pull it apart. |

I use Redline synthetic, and the trans is very quiet. _________________ 1980 924 Turbo |

| Somehow it magically got better after about 100 kms of driving I took it for a few long drives and after a quick trip into work it just went quiet and the shifts became almost perfect. Can someone explain how on earth that happened? I'm beginning to think it was magic because there is no way it would take that long for the oil to run through and penetrate all the parts. |
