The Link takes you to the catalog page for the right part, but the text describes an insert, while the photo is a complete strut.

Yes, an insert should fit the early 924 strut.

Actually, a complete strut will fit as well, you just take your spring, upper spring perch along with the spacer (you do have the 6mm spacer installed per Porsche TB, right), buy new 944 upper strut bushing/bearing assemblies, and screw on the new strut nut that came with the new inserts. If you ever do this, do not throw away the old struts, you might need the strut housings incase you ever go to strut inserts.

Nope, can't beat that, although JC Whitney has the inserts for MK1 VW's for $26 a piece, but nothing for the 924.

I'd recommend getting something better than KYB though, they have a nasty reputation for premature failure. Tokico and Bilstein HD's aren't too much more expensive, and are well worth the money.
