Guy's,

Just thought i would post up some pics of the new engine and ancilliaries in the car. She is up and running, and sounds mint!! needs a proper mapping session, but lots to do before that.
There are a few bits to finish off, but the overall packaging has worked out a treat. Most of the cables you see are temporary affairs, just to get here breathing.
Now with a stock GT turbo, getting the right trim hould be a snap.
And the dry sump system really was worth the hassle. Has totally transformed the engine.

Oh, and for some back ground info if this is new to you, go here http://www.924board.org/viewtopic.php?t=23865

Enjoy

Steve

Steve, thanks for the pics, looks amazing! I like the detail work on the exhaust manifold, I can imagine a fair amount of thought went into that given the RHD steering.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is being driven by the pulley beside and slightly below the alternator? Is that part of a dry sump oil system?

Second question, is the oil breather on the side of the block capped off? Or is that just a vent straight to the atmosphere?

Really neat stuff, love to see the envelope being pushed.

Guys,

The pump under the alternator is the dry sump pump. It is driven from a front pulley, and scavenges the oil from the modified sump, and sends it to the oil tank. The front section of the pump draws oil from the botom of the tank, where it has been de-aerated, and pumps it through the oil filter into the engine. The advantage is that there is no way the oil pressure can drop through aeration or starvation. The tank is 5" diameter and 14" tall, so no matter how hard the cornering forces, the ol is always covering the pickup.
Once you dry sump a motor, the block needs to be totally sealed up, as the pump will actually create a slight vacuum inside the engine, which is a very good thing.
So all breathers, must be sealed shut, with only a vent to the catch tank via a one way valve in case the block needs to vent.
This vacuum aids in ring sealing, and generally improves the overall performance of the motor.
I think with the right turbo, this motor would be cpable of 400+ ponies, even more with a bore and stroke to 2.3/2.4 litres.
It will be interesting to see how much boost is needed to achieve my race target. That would be a good indication of the head room available, should i want to go into the unlimited category but without slicks. I suspect the ca would be quicker on the slicks with less power rather than just turning up the wick and overwhelming the chassis with 400+BHP.
I guess there are more than a few of you here wondering why in hell anyone would do this with a little old '24. Well, i love the challenge, and want to create something quite unique. Mission accomplished i think/hope.

Steve

I'm not wondering, looks like a labor of love to me, and beautifully executed.

I'm glad someone has the knowledge and dedication to push the 924 that extreme. It is amazing. Thanks for the additional info and patience with questions. I've said it before, the UK Porsche magazines (911&PW and GT) should be knocking down your door to do an article on that car. Even Excellence has featured cars outside the US, they should be looking at it as well, it is soooo interesting. Instead, last month the water pumper content in Excellence consisted of a very mild and not very tastefully modified 951, and an article on a hybrid Cayenne. Boring!

the cayenne was cool, hybrid proformance cars are new fast and economical and im glade porsche is jumping right on in. but the 951 was a big disipiontment, i think Exellence didnt want to show all their 911 lovers all the potential our four clinders really have.

I think that's why Carrera32 joined up recently.

Bass GT, i think you would get along well with Special Tool on the 951 rennlist forums. He built a 602whp 951 with a 2.5 liter for the challenge.

Track buddy of mine did that. . .cost him well into 5 figures. The first 50 HP on a 951 are cheap, the next 50 are not.
