hello everyone. It's been raining quite hard over here this last week so i have had to use the interior heater to demist the windscreen due to condensation caused by a leaky sunroof seal. It's going fine, on cold (hot air seems to make the windows steam up worse) but when i turn sharpish left corners the fan/motor of the blowers makes an almighty screaming noise! - any one know what could be causing this? i actually thought i'd blown a water pipe....

Thanks guys.

The blower is a gyroscope rotor. After all these years it's worn and lacks lubrication. When you turn the gyro rotor trys to precess and places an increased load on the bearings. If the bearings are worn enough then surfaces that are not supposed to touch may come together.

One of the installed blowers is actually vertical so the gyroscopic effects should be minimal. However, could still happen. If you have this unit then try dropping some oil on the upper end of the shaft which is underneath the intake flapper.

The other is a horizontal squirrel cage blower and you're going to have to pull it to try lubrication. 944 blowers can be pulled from the top. I don't remember on the 924.

!!!!!!

Mine does it on right handers not all the time, just now and then.... it's one of her quirks... along with the rear hatch and bonnet "chirping" like a manic budgerigar when we drive along certain roads...

Is that what the noise is. I thought it was a wheel bearing.

Are all these damn cars so full of odd little quirks?! Is it just their ages perhaps?

Loads of silly little things with mine, not faults per-say but things i notice all the time and would (strangely) miss if they weren't their... kinda defining things about the car... - the passenger seatbelt makes a kind of rumble as it is pulled out, like a friction toy being over wound.... if the bonnet or hatch start chirping it's usually on the way HOME from a drive, never on the way out (what's that all about then?!!!)... sometimes the air vent on the passenger side will snap shut (my wife always has that one open) and it will keep snapping shut when she opens it again for umpteen attempts - but it's never done this when i'm in the car alone, only when she's in! ohh, the glove compartment door attacks her aswell sometimes, it'll just drop onto her knee's suddenly (again never on anyone else or when i'm alone)... sh*t, i've just realised I'm driving Christine, except she doesn't straighten dents out on her own! lol

Hi Guys,

I'm just this minute home from work and i'm straight on here telling you whats happened. I site here in my work suit with one shoe and sock off, the left one.

I went out to the car at lunchtime and opened the sunroof to let the water evaporate a little and i cleaned the windows of all moisture. Driving home, it was like i had new windows! - got to about 1 mile from my house and i too the last exit off the roundabout ( the car was leaning to the left going round) i heard the squeak and smiled to myself knowing that it wasn't a major fault as i had read your replies before i left work. Anyway, while i was thinking about patting the dashboard like a dog and saying "ahhh....." my left foor started burning...

THE BLOODY HEATER VENT STARTED SPEWING OUT ROASTING HOT WATER!!!! while this was happening, every window in the car steamed up in a fraction of a second!! there i was trying to deal with the pain of having my foot scaled and also trying to see where i was going!

Any ideas on how the F**k that happened? my immediate concern is that the heater matrix has a hole in it but if that was the case wouldn't it be leaking all the time??

it is that the plastic end of the heater cap dropped off and allowed the hot water to get to you.

I can just picture you driving allong like ace ventura with the broken window head out the windows so he can see,

at this time repace the heater core and your on you merry way, but I will warn you this is my most unfavorite job, I would rather replace the turbo as that is easier,

anyway have fun

Well put. I too would rather replace a turbo than try to get the heater core out.

BTW, they are not repairable.

Being an optimist I would suggest a cracked heater hose. Still a PITA to work on from what I can tell, but hopefully a little eaiser and less expensive.

I'm going to be an optimist and say there are no leaks in your coolant system, rather, the water is getting in through the fresh air inlet on the battery shelf. Take a look to see if the shroud is sealed up properly around the bottom and make sure your battery shelf drain holes are clear.

I'm thinking something like this- water pools up on the battery shelf around the windshield wiper motor. You take a hard left and it sloshes over and into the air inlet. It hits the heater motor (makes it squeel) then falls through the heater core (getting very hot) then finally falls on your toes if there is enough of it (i.e. very hard turn or large puddle on the battery shelf).

You're driving a right hand drive car right? The water just sloshes from the puddle near the wipers on the left to your feet on the right as you take a left turn.

Certainly worth checking before doing anything with the heater core.
