Tthe car accerlerates like a bat out of hell from my driveway to the edge of town (5 minutes) but after that it seems to take more RPMs to acheive the same acceleration from a stop... like I am revving it up in third and not seeming to really be gaining too much speed.
This sounds like a clutch problem (which I have checked), but why would it only show up after driving the car for several miles?
Also, things are pretty smooth until I get to 5th gear. In 5th, the car surges and lurches, has no power, and is difficult to get into the powerband.
Of course, highway speeds are fairly easily reached in 4th, but the 5th gear thing is annoying.
Anything I should look at? _________________ 82 924 N/A -

if the clutch is slipping then the car would rev up in gear, it is possible that you have a block in the line between the master and slave, or the master and resevoir, if there is a slight block in the line the clutch will work ok when cold but once the fluid heats up it could expand and with the block in the line it could not allow the fluid to escape back to the resevior but be trapped in the line causing the slave cyl to be open/expand releasing the hold the pressure plate has on the clutch disc
make sence?? _________________ 3 928s, |

It would make alot of sense if I had a hydraulic clutch... sadly, the NA has a mechanical clutch, which seems to have every bit as much "personality" as the rest of the car, and decides when it is and isn't going to work properly in a somewhat erratic fashion. _________________ 82 924 N/A -

Hmm, Lizard, My 82 has a manual clutch not a hydraulic clutch. Dd some come with the hydraulic in 82?
I would think it is is your clutch but the mystery is it waits till it is warmed up. but the clutch may be grabbin fine when cold and after it gets good and warmed up it may staart to slip. Or maybe bad syncros? It is peculiar. Keep us posted on what you discover? _________________ Life is to short to be looking for something? |

Yeah... I have gotten a little more confident with the car since the engine is getting some miles on it... driving it a little harder, shifting a little higher, etc. Still have my rev limiter set at 4,800 till the engine is 100% broken in.
I am thinking about getting a new aluminum flywheel and a centerforce clutch as my next upgrade. The engine is producing more power than stock (definitely), so maybe a stronger clutch makes sense. _________________ 82 924 N/A -

If the clutch was slipping you would smell it pretty quickly. This sounds like tuning problems to me, especially since it happens as the car warms up. 5th gear surges- definately tuning, A/F or vacuum advance problems.
I bet you're leaning out too much as the car warms-up. Could be vacuum leaks- if you've got any lines left? That would also screw with 5th gear cruising- where manifold vacuum is low (all the sudden you're running rich becuase you're not pulling in a bunch of extra air from the vacuum leak).
Aren't carbs a b*tch?!
