Believe the "VC" identifies it as a 1980 or later US,Canadian or Japanese engine.

78's should have an XG or XE (49 states or CA) code. Engine swap?

No such thing as a "XVC" engine code.
The mechanical stamping of the engine codes is not perfect.
More than likely, what he has a European Spec. (XK or XJ) engine with poor stamping.
XV and XJ, could look very close. And I would guess that the C is actually the number 0. |

Take some fine sandpaper and lightly sand the surface where the code/serial number is to remove any surface corrosion and junk that may have accumulated on the stamping. Wipe off the sanding residue, then mark it with some chalk, then wipe it again. The chalk will fill in the writing and the letters/numbers should be very legible now. _________________ '79 Eurospec 931 |

Been watching too many episodes of CSI...
Anyway, using the chalk, fingernail polish or white-out on the timing marks as well (flywheel and camshaft) is a handy thing to do too. _________________ '79 Eurospec 931 |
