Is the in tank fuel pump needed? The external fuel pump went out and I'm not sure if the internal pump is good or not. I've got the parts to get ride of the in tank pump but I'm not sure how much work it actually does. Thanks.

the intank pump is a low pressure pump 35psi iirc, and all it does is help to eliminate vapor lock in the fuel system on REALLY hot days

This has come up before, and it seems that the Board's concensus is that the car will in fact run using only the external pump. I suspect that if you choose to go with only the external pump, you should probably "gut" the internal pump so it won't restrict fuel flow to the external one. The other down-side to not using the internal pump is that it has a fine-mesh screen filter to keep junk out of the external pump (easily fixed by using a small in-line filter though).

It is my understanding that the internal pump acts to prime the external pump. Since the external pump is lubricated and cooled by the fuel I would say replace the internal pump to be on the safe side.
