|
|
My 931 is going in to the shop monday for new paint. I'm debating whether to reinstall the side molding over the new paint. The paint color is going back to guards red. Does the side molding provide that much protection? How about appearance? From the pictures on 924Org quite a few do not have molding and it doesn't seem to detract from their beauty. Recommendations?
Thanks,

Dennis, that's kind of your own personal choice I think. _________________ 1978 924 n/a |

| IMO the strips look good on light colored cars, but do nothing for the dark cars, especially black. |

The question may be moot. Went out to drive it to the paint shop and the clutch dropped to the floor. Leaking clutch slave cylinder. None of the local auto parts stores have one. I'm waiting for a call bck from Zuffin to see if he has one. May need to have it towed or reschedule.

I wouldn't replace it, I dont like it, instead I would leave it red, and I personally would use a rubberized undercoating there to help avoiding chips to the paint _________________ 3 928s, |

Well, it's at the paint shop. I pressure bled the clutch then took off. The last half mile was without a clutch.
Lizard the molding I am refering to is the half inch wide one that is more than half way up the door. Not sure the undercoating would look good there. The wide one on the bottom will have to be replaced as there are welded on connectors. I did find some rust under the wide bottom molding when I removed it. Guess my paint shop bill just went up.

oh my bad, yah the bottom molding is what I was refering to, as for the side molding, I would leave it off, it cleans the car up alot IMHO _________________ 3 928s, |

i would suggest keeping it on unless you want dings all over that crease in the door. i thought it looked better with it off too, now the door looks like hell when a light hits it just right. paint the molding to match the car if you want, or you could avoid ever parking next to someone else- which won't happen too often.

When I had my 80NA (may it rest in peace) painted, I parked it in a hospital parking lot where no other cars were around. When I came out there was one other car in the row and it was parked right beside me. Yep, they had peeled an inch of new paint off with their door. When I left they had a lot larger dent in their door.
Where I work now, I use a gated alley. The only way they can hit me is in the rear.
Thanks,

This is my opinion as well. The lighter the color, the more the strips add to the car. _________________ -Stu

Absolutely keep the molding. I'm thankful every day I park my car that it's protected from all the SUV-driving morons by those strips. I really wish my fiancee's WRX had the strips, it's already got more than it's share of abuse, and she's only had it since January! And her work parking garage is a closed, locked, gated, covered, heated and everything facility!!! It's those random careless f*cksticks in shopping mall lots, etc.
It's a particularly bad problem here in Detroit I think, because everyone here drives new cars, everyone gets a company car or a deal from the manufacturers, so nobody cares about their cars (or anyone else's). Between the condition of the roads, the a$$hole drivers, and that, it's a bad place to own and drive a collector car... _________________ Vaughan Scott

I suggest you get them also.
I put them on the doors and on the fender/quater sections that are dirrectly before and after the door.
I did not put them back on the far corners of the car. I think it looks better this way and it is very unlikely that some one is going to hit that section with a door.
Similar to what they did on the 944. Only in between the wheels.
See my car at my site
www.geocities.com/eturbo924 The new picture shows the trim I am talking about.

Good point about the placement, in fact you might consider upgrading to the 944 parts. IIRC they are intended to be painted over to match, right? _________________ Vaughan Scott

Eric,
Great idea! Now if I can just get them to the painter before the car is sprayed.
Thanks to all for their input.
