From: Peter Email: peter_warner25@hotmail.com Date: 25 Jun 2001 Time: 01:23:55Now and again when I'm driving, the intermittent wipers will come on without me turning them on. It often happens when I put the turn signals on, but more recently it just happens at any time. Yesterday it got so bad that they stayed on for the whole day! I assume I need to change the wiper and indicator stalks or is there something else I should check first? Will the wiper and indicator stalks come off of the steering column as one unit or are they 2 different switches (I ask because putting on the indicators seems to affect the operation of the wipers.
Thanks
Peter

From: Eric Email: Eric.lynch@itt.com Date: 25 Jun 2001 Time: 11:11:16There is a ground wire that comes loose or some thing.
I believe that is an article about it in the tech section. If not some
one else here has done it and will tell you. Common problem though

From: Anthony Email: anthys@hotmail.com Date: 26 Jun 2001 Time: 05:08:36I too am having this problem on my 80' 931, I think these ground wires are in a group all together under the passenger compartment (right hand drive) although I actually took my steering wheel off, had a fiddle and replaced it, it hasn't happened since, but my problem is when using the washers or wipers they don't park properly. They return, overshoot the park position and come back up the screen and stop, anyone know why this happens.

From: Eric Email: Eric.lynch@itt.com Date: 26 Jun 2001 Time: 09:08:20I believe the issue is the ground strap that is under the steering wheel.
I am surprised that no one has chimed in to tell you this. I have not performed this surgury myself but
have heard about this issue and have the same problem no and again. Like I said above the
issue lies in the ground strap for the actual switch/stock assembly under the steering wheel.
I believe you need to remove the steering wheel and tighten the ground wire screw. Put a new
lock washer on it adn it should eliminate the wipers going on over bumps and such. Also if the
screw has vibrated most of the way out the wipers could stay on like you have reported.
Good luck
Eric

How far are your wipers sweeping across your window. Do they make full travel on upper side?
I had a car that slipped its normal position in the heavy snows a few years ago. Thus the wiper
was not going all the way up the window by a few inches. Therefore it was off at the bottom by the
same amount. If you have room before the wiper hits the pillar, adjust it to take up this travel. This
should allow it the extra room to park at the bottom.
If not let me know and I will think some more......

From: Peter Email: peter_warner25@hotmail.com Date: 26 Jun 2001 Time: 15:52:52I didn't find an earth strap anywhere, but by removing the switches from the steering rack, cleaning the contacts and re-insulating part of the switch where the plastic had broken off of the switch body (I suspect causing it to earth to the steering rack), the problem seems to be solved for now!!
Cheers
