does anyone know how to tighten up the shifter? i think lars had the same problem as me. when you have it in gear (any gear) the shifter feels like it's in neutral it has about 3-4 inches of side to side movement. does anyone know how to tighten it so it doesn't move. also i can't get the shifter all the way over to get into reverse because it hits the sidewall. it's like the tranny shifted to the left.

thanks for the help
steve

If you have the Audi-based trans, as it sounds like you do, then it's because of wear at the pin on the shifter. I had this on the racecar... still have some, but at least I can get into reverse now... I replaced the pin on the shifter knob with a new fabricated one, but still have a huge amount of wear on the rod that comes forward from the trans... have to rework that yet... will try to include some bearings like those trick shifters they sell for Hondas...

Hey, I have the solution for the worn hole in the rod. I bought the plastic bushings that are used with the snale shell shifter and used them on this rod. You just need to drill out the hole slightly. Now you won't wear these parts out, just the bushings. I have been using these in my 924 (w/944 transaxle) for a few years now.

When I first ( 2nd Day) got my car the shifter fell apart as I was driving along in traffic. I managed to get to a friends mig by shifting gear by reaching in to the trans tunnel and directly shift using the extension arm. I welded the pin back in but it broke out a few days later , finally I drilled the shifter arm and replaced the pin with a high tensile bolt with large flat washers on each side .
Thanks for the tip Vaughan I will get a rubber or noelethane bush for the bolt.

Steve, I modified the shifter on my '82 931 with very good results about a year ago. I think it's the same shifter as yours. I cut off the pin, ground off the weld and rewelded the original hole solid. I then drilled and tapped the arm for a 10mm? shoulder bolt of an appropriate length. The shoulder bolt fits nicely in the rod end with just enough tolerance. I installed the bolt through the rod with wavy spring washers on both sides and threaded it into the arm. I put a jam nut on the back side to lock it in place. It has worked beautifully for a year; it's my daily driver. I can look through my notes if you want specific sizes. By the way, if you want to shorten your shift (as I did) now is the time to do it.
