I have an '82 924 with about 74,000 miles. When I bought it there was some clicking coming
from the area of the cam cover. I suspected that the valves needed to be adjusted and I did that.
Now there is still some noise (although somewhat less). The noise seems to become louder
after the car has warmed up.

When I adjusted the valves I did it with the engine cold. Was that a mistake? Are you supposed
to adjust the valves with the engine hot? Also is it possible that the noise is from the injector
and not the valve.

I followed the Haynes manual EXACTLY. If the Haynes manual is wrong, what is the right
procedure?

well i think in ONE place, haynes actaully has teh right SPECS for valve clearance, but in about 50 other places, they are off by a decimal.

When cold the valve clearance should be 0.004 INCHES (not 0.04 or whatver haynes size in numberous places) on the intake ones, and check your car for the exhaust one, some cars very a bit...I think its 0.012 when cold, not sure.

check the sticker on the driver side inner fender above ignition module.
