Great site, I've found answers to some other questions I had... but my main concern 1st is Tires and Wheels.

I own a 1987 924S, its starting to show its age, so I want to start updating it with a new paint job, seats...etc The car currently has the phone dial rims on it (which I love since it is a Porsche trademark wheel), but I want to get some newer style rims. Can someone tell me the "exact" information and specs for my current wheels and tires, and what I should be looking for (size, offsets...etc). Once I tried to update some tires and rims through a tire place for and 88' Pontiac Formula and they screwed me... I had rubbing problems and it handled like crap, I don't want to make the same mistake again.

Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated. Website suggestions for Porsche parts and accessories would be awesome as well.

Thanks in advance!

Jim

I was just looking at www.tirerack.com... you get to plug in your car information.

When I plug in 87' 924S for rims I get 17x7.5 with a disclaimer (The 1987 Porsche 924S requires different size front and rear wheels). I like the "AT Italia 5 Razze" and "Mille Miglia Cup"

As for tires 195/65-15. There are 2 I like the Yokohama AVSdB and Pirelli P600's.

Are these sizes and specs OK? any thoughts, comments or suggestions?

Yoko's would be fine choice, but ABSOLUTELY do not use P-600's. Very little grip on dry road and ZERO grip on wwet road. That's what was on my 924S when I bought it and I'm trying to burn'em off so I can rationalize Yoko AVS Intermediates..Good luck!

Thanks again,

Jim, you do realize that you mentioned 17" rims but 15" tires right? Better try again. As for tires, I have 205/55 VR 16 Nitto NT 450's on my '82 931 and they stick pretty well both wet and dry. They're actually pretty cheap too.

I could have sworn there was a wheel/tire chart on the website. But maybe not.

The 924S came with 15x6 inch wheels 53.2mm offset (commonly called 53 or 54 mm - the marking on the whell is 53.2) Only size in the US; no 16 were offered optional. You can use 15x7, same offset, same as 'late' 944. This upgrade is easy and will work with a street or track camber setting but starts to get into inteference with the spring support shelf on the struts and the wheel edge and the tire against the spring or fender edge. Also 16x6 or 16x7, same offset will work.

The stock tire size was 195-65x15, optional 205-60. 205 tires and any aspect ratio works with the above wheels. 225 fits but starts to become brand specific esp with the 16 inch wheels (there are slight width variations)

In the rear you can go to 8 inch wide.

All this is based on swapping around Pcar wheels. So just match against the specs: 15x7 53mm offset or 16x7 53mm offset. Let them do the math to come up with the backspacing (which is probably how they figure it) I doubt very much that any wider wheel can be made to work.

I currently use 15x7 53.2mm with Khumo V700 in 225x50. No interference front or back. Approximately 1/4 inch clearance between the wheel edge and strut support and the tire and spring. Have run RE71 in 225x16-50 with slight interference with the inner fender well.
