Repairing the battery box from the inside got me wondering about the A/C system on my '81. Currently, it is not working (cooling the air) as far as I can tell. Am considering taking it to be diagnosed with an estimate to get it back to new. But if that is too expensive, I'm taking it out anyway.

I was hoping for some help from the list though. When working properly, how well does the A/C system work? If these things don't work well, then I'll just take it out rather than spend money to get it fixed only to blow semi-cool. I do know that the A/C fan is much better than the normal one.

What kinda weight savings can I expect from removing it?

The whole idea of airconditioning in a "true wind in your face, water on your head, ride like a truck
sports car" is not on. Plus there's a Green issue and that is; all air conditioners leak bad stuff. My two
shtinking cents worth. dwak

But doesnt do much. On a 90deg day its kicking out 60 deg air from the vents but doesnt have the BTU's to cool the car. I almost never use it, If I were you and its expensive to fix, I would strip it out. About the only time its worth using is on hot, humid nights when there is no sun load on the car.

My '79 has air and it works great. I have also converted it to R134a. It blows 42 deg. air on a 90 deg. day.

PST. What did you do to convert over? Mine works fine now, and I still have some R32, but I will need to convert over some day. Any loss in performance after the conversion?

I used a kit from a local parts store that contains a can of o-ring conditioner/oil; adapter fittings and a decal. You screw the adapter fittings onto the origional and recharge to 85% of the R12 charge. I've used this kit on 3 cars succussfully. However, on my Caravan the condenser isn't large enough so I only get 50 deg. out of it. I need to change the condenser. R134a needs a larger or more efficient condenser than R12 and the pressures are a little different. The sight glass isn't really useful either. When fully charged, the sight glass looks milky instead of clear. Also, the low side pressure should be 12-20 PSI and the high side should be 200-250 PSI. It is very easy to overcharge R134a so be careful. Also, make sure that you do a thorough job of evacuating before charging.
