This was a joint venture started in 1972 with Porsche to design a sports car to be sold by VW,it was cancelled by VW and repurchased by Porsche in 1974.
The engine is based on VW Audi type 831 which started life in 1965 at 1760cc for the Audi 90,in 1974 it was increased in size to 1871cc and in 1975 to 1984cc and fitted with a belt driven camshaft.
The Porsche version differs by being fitted with a Forged steel crankshaft with larger main bearings,A front mounted crescent oil pump to increase oil flow,different cam followers and camshaft,the Audi version having shimmed followers.
Compression ratios of 9.3:1 for Europe and 8:1 for USA.
The VW-Audi engine was fitted in varios sizes to the Audi 90 and 100 cars and the VW LT Vans
a quantity of the basic engine was supplied to AMC for the Gremlin and these were bare engines which were then fitted with local manufactured fuel and electrical systems.
All engines were manufactured at VW Salzgitter plant with the exception of the Porsche 924 unit which was assembled at the Audi plant,the 924 Turbo engine was assembled by Porsche in their own factory.
