I have an 81 931, the primary cooling fan seems to be running slow, but when I hot wire it it runs fine. I want to know where in or on the car is the resistor? I want to check it. And are there any problems running the fan with out one?

its on the drivers side, high high up below the dash, its this white circle (cylinder) about 1.5 inches in diameter and about 0.5 inches deep.

You can get at it by taking the instrument cluster (gauges, tach, spedo, bexel, etc) completely out, and it is to the right slightly of that on the vertical firewall. I think two bolts or screws hold it.

only if the car is a '78 or later - otherwise it's on top of the rad., top left corner, and corroded to disfunction.

This is why it's under the dash in the later cars

the resistor on my '77 is has failed too... anyone know where to find one (I know its by the radiator, I mean who sells them). Is it okay to just by-pass it and let the fan run at full speed?

The resistor is used to cut the fan speed when it comes on after you have shut the car off. If it is not working (open) the cooling fan will not run when the engine is off. No harmful effect. If the resistor shorts, or you wire across it, the fan will run at full speed after you shut the car off, until the radiator coolant cools enough for the fan switch to open. Also no harmful effect, except for the noise that the fan makes. If your fan is running slow when the car is warm and running, your problem is not the resistor. It is probably the fan resistor, as this is the item that switches the voltage routing to the fan, dependent on if your ignition switch is on or not.

You can see a picture and description of one installed in an 80 931 if you look in the Parts section of this website. Have you bothered to look at the information available to you on the website?
