My headline pretty much says it all. I have a perfectly good exhaust on my '79 N/A right now. I guess it's standard size. I was considering putting something on a little "freer-flowing". I noticed when I had the old muffler on which had lots of holes and therefore breathed better, the car ran just a tad better. Any advice is appreciated.

Depends how high you want to go. Generally as you go up in pipe size your high end power and torque increases and you low end decreases. Basically you want to find some place in the middle where it's all good.

Well, according to all the magazine article posts on http://www.geocities.com/eturbo924/, there are no power gains from "bolt-on" stuff if you still have a stock head.
I'm in the same boat. Custom exhaust at the local muffler shop can be very affordable. Hell, even aftermarket (Ansa?) stuff isn't that pricey. But, I'm now convinced that is pointless unless I rebuild/port the head. I'm gonna try a thinner gasket for more compression and a cam regrind too.

the pipe size stock is already a perfect fit for the car, porsche spent time putting all the bolt on stuff ahead of time, the exhaust manifold is good stock with all your other stock stuff, they have already done the bolt on stuff for you, what they haven't done is given you a good camshaft and a good head, those are the choke areas taht you gotta spend bucks on along with soem matching pistons.

I just bought a '78 924 that someone had put headers on, it is very loud inside the car and
seems to create a lot of heat in the interior.
the article link that was posted seems not to work, do you know the original source of the
bolt-on article?
