Just changed the timing belt on one of my '78 924 NA's. The problem I have is that the tensioner pulley is just bolted on there is no extra section to grab to turn the pulley to tighten the belt. How am I supposed to get the timing belt on tight? and how tight should it be? According to the Haynes Manual it should be tight to the point where you can jut barely turn it 90 degrees on the long side. But from my experience on changing it on my other car that seems to be too tight and causes noise from the bearing behind the cam pulley. Is noise from there normal?

Thanks

If it set up like mine yu should be able to get a wrench on the large nut and turn it to apply proper tension. While holding it you can tighten the other bolt.

Did you purchase the upgraded 944 style tension/idle pulley? If so you can purchase a tool
that has two prongs that engage the holes in that style pulley.

Or if you are like me and don't want to wait, or spend money on a tool you will use maybe 3 times.
Do you have a thin, but strong hole punch? Most screw driver sets come with one. Use the punch
in one of the holes. You can then rotate the pulley into place and hold it there while you tighten the
bolt.

As far as the tension goes yes just able to turn 90 degrees is correct. Normally if you over tighten
the belt you are more lible to wear out the bearings in the tension pulley, but if you are hearing
excessive noise I would track it down and make sure you have the proper amount of lubrication
on the cam bearings. Get a scope or..... a card board tube and use it to track down the noise.
Tube goes to your ear......

Hope that helps.

I use a small prybar or screwdriver to force the pulley to rotate to get the desired tension.

If the pulley is making noise, replace it - not too expensive.

I guess it is the 944 upgraded pulley because it does have those two holes in it versus having the extra nut to turn.

Thanks for the info
