I would say by judging how fast the oil pressure builds up when you first start the engine when cold.

if you're pressure reading is low, the first suspect should be the sender unit.

I would check the pressure on the car when you start it when it is cold. When the engine is hot it is ok if the oil pressure at idle is at .5 or 1 bar. So the only good way to check is on a cold start. I think the oil light will come on if the pump stops working but Im not sure. The only other way to know is when it dies.
