Well i've drawn up a list of parts i'm going to buy to restore atleast the engine portion of my 924. I think it's pretty complete. Here it is... tell me if i'm missing anything. Remember, this is just the ENGINE, i will do the brakes and whatnot later.

You need the pilot bearing. You also may end up needing the pilot bearing housing (its pressed into the back of the crank) You can buy the complete bearing and housing already assembled from perf. products. Without checking I think they went for 80.00?
You may not need a pilot bearing puller. With my 78 I was able to take a bolt (I used one from the bellhousing-its the right pitch and dia. for this job) and screwed in through the center of the pilot bearing/housing and pressed the bearing out. But.....it seems that there are 2 styles of bearing housings and if you don`t have the right one, this approach will not work. Be prepared to buy a pilot bearing puller that will work. If you have the engine on a stand, installation should be a snap using a deadblow hammer.
Fuel system: fuel filter good injector cleaner
If you plan to do this entire job with the engine in the car its doable but there is less room to work with the clutch. this is after you pull the trans back (I think it was 8-10") So whats your approach?
I forgot to add that you need to add oil to your list.

| If you plan to drop the trans and pull it back, check the condition of your trans mounts. One tip: don`t forget to remove the reverse switch on the back of the trans like I did...easily overlooked. |

on old engines, usually the breather hose will be old and brittle, mine cracked in half. pretty expensive. 40-50 bucks will get you one. _________________ 1979 Porsche 924 "S"

You need a total engine gasket set &head gasket
not just a crank seal kit and what about bearings ar you not gonna get knew rod and main bearings and maybe some new piston rings _________________ 1979 porsche 924 Na

hey Phil,
if you've got a '77 (like it says in your tag) then you will need a slide hammer and bearing puller to get the pilot bearing out. i borrowed these from my friendly mechanic when i did it. i would recommend the same, or autozone has a free tool lending program if there's one nearby.
the pilot bearing is cheap. just be sure to grease it up well. i would also recommend the throwout bearing guide tube (put a dab of grease on it too). another cheap piece and dead simple to replace. it's just held in with a couple bolts in the bellhousing.
if you're just doing some preventive maintenance and freshening then there's no need to mess with pistons and crank bearings. take a good look around the gaskets for any signs of leaks. obviously if there's a leak you'll want to replace the gasket.
also, get a new valve cover gasket and check the valve lash. another easy step toward a purring motor.
new water pumps are pretty cheap if you feel so inclined. you'll definately want to add a new timing belt and tensioner to the list - both are pretty cheap.
are you sourcing your prices from the dealer? the only parts you'd need to get through them are the hoses and likely the seal. i would go to a local import autoparts shop for the rest. they're all standard sachs and bosch parts. well, maybe not standard but available for order. you'll pay less for them than at the dealer for sure.
one last thing- be sure to get bosch plug wires. they're more expensive but much higher quality than any of the others. excluding magnecors and such, which i haven't used.

Those clutch prices are pretty high. Performance Products only wants $246.37 for the pressure plate, disc, and throw-out bearing. That's a savings of almost $50. I don't think shipping will run you that much. I bought my clutch from PP and it was all Sachs. _________________ Jon Furst |
