I purchased a brand new thermostat from porsche with a temp. rating of 83 degrees celsius. I did a simple test. First I heated water to 83 celsius checked it with my digital thermometer.I then submerged completely both the old and the new. The old thermostat opened right at the initial temp. of 83 celsius. The new thermostat did not open until 90 celsius. The old thermostat did not close until about 72 celsius, the new closed at 76 celsius. I figured well maybe it's because the product is new, so I installed the thermostat and took the car for a spin around the neighborhood, the temperature sorred. So to bring the temperature down I drove on the freeway, this did not work. Even with both fans on in my 1988 924S. The temperature was reaching past the halfway mark with the old thermostat but not like this and surely not with both fans on,driving on the freeway. I tried returning the thermostat two days later with receipt, and porsche would not take their product back unless I gave them my vin number and the mileage on the car, which i did not. I stormed out of their wondering what difference does it make whether the car has 10 miles or 100,000 miles, if the thermostat has a temp rating of 83 celsius and it does not open it's a defective product. I would appreciate any info. on when the thermostat should close becuse this might be the reason why my temperature rides so high with the old thermostat. Thank You!

Sorry about your experience
Here is what I know.
The standard thermostat should begin to open at 82 plus minus
2 deg C. It should be fully open at 93 deg C

A couple quick questions. What was your mixture ratio.... water to coolant?
Also did you blead the coolant system properly?

Not questioning your abilities..... I hope. Just trying to help.
What condition is your radiator in? Also I recall some other 924S owner
saying some thing about a splitter blocking some of the radiator.
Just poke your head under the bumper and inspect it all.

Good luck.

Eric
