Have a problem with the fuel pumps on my 79 924. Around 85K the original out of the tank pump started to whin when the car warmed up. I ignored this until the pump died and then replaced it. The car ran fine for about 3K and then start the whinning again. Since I had a new in the tank pump laying around I replaced it. That took care of the problem for about another 3K and now when the car is warm, the out of the tank pump is starting to whin again. Any idea why I can have a pump with less then 6k on it that seems to be going bad?

not enough fuel flow from a clogged in the tank filter, or the check valve/bypass valve is sticking.

Othere wise the rest of the car runs fine?

Thanks for the input. No other problems with the car other then the fuel pump. The problem seems to follow the temp. The warmer the outside weather the sooner the fuel pump starts whinning after the car is started. Ran fine through the cold weather this winter and just started up again when the weather started to warm up.

The pump outside of the fuel tank relies on the in tank pump to provide it with a little fuel pressure. If the in tank pump doesn't pump then it causes the external one to overheat and fail. Which would mean the hotter it is outside the sooner the external pump is going to get hot and whine and eventually die. Try checking for loose wiring or broken wires. It seems to be to be the most logical thing to check. I had the same problem and that's what caused it.

Thanks for the input. Replaced the in tank pump after the replaced exterior started to whin again. Thats worked for a couple thousand miles but since the weather has started getting warm the whin in exterior pump is back. Any other ideas?

Just a little note I read on another site. A guy was complaining about having to spend $750.00 to have his fuel pump replaced on a 1 year old truck. Seems he had a habit of running his tanks dry before switching or refilling, which meant his pumps were not being cooled properly inside the tanks. Doubt that this is your problem but something to keep in mind.
