I was wondering what an EGR is in terms of 924/944 speedometer cables, I have a speedometer cable for my car but it is all one cable I think I need the upper and lower?

The box that connects the cable between the cable from the tire and the cable to the speedo is the EGR box plus I believe that also adjusts for the speed of the gauge... it has a button on it to reset the EGR when you need to have it replaced....

The entire EGR system should be checked at about every 30,000 miles. It wears just like the rest of the system. The "black box" that the speedo connects to is a milage counter, and, the EGR light will come on every 30,000 miles. To reset it, press in the small white button on the black box. It has nothing to do with the calibration of the speedo.

The speedo cable off my junked 77.5 goes all the way from the front spindle to the speedo. It appears that the 77.5 (Calf Smog) did not have an EGR black box. My Martini Rossi has one and it uses two shorter cables. The 80 931 I have also has a 944 speedo in it. (refer to earlier postings), so the 944 cable should fit.

The two piece cable going through the mileage counter is applicable beyound cars with 'EGR' systems. On later cars it illuminates a 'OXY' light. Same light, different lable. Depending on the intensity of your local jurisdictions emissions testing visual inspection you can leave out the box and use the one piece cable. You will have to ensure the wiring is suitably modified.

Alternatively, just send the one piece cable to me and I will see that it is disposed of safely! ;-)

I can confirm, my '77.5 Cal spec car had the one-piece cable. My '79 fed-spec also has the same setup, as it has no O2 sensor.
The box w/ 2 cables was only fitted, as I believe John already mentioned, on the cars w/ O2 sensors, to record mileage to trip the light to warn for replacement of the O2 sensor.
