Does anyone know if its possible to change the big ends with the engine in situ ? i.e just drop the sump and change them.

It can be done, just a PITA to get the pan down. If I remember right you have to drop the cross member and of course there are the additional oil lines on the turbo. I pulled a pan on one to check the crank for damage, I was hoping to replace the knocking rod without pulling the motor. Ended up rebuilding the entire engine after I pulled it from the car.
