I would like to congratulate you on choosing the 924. These are very reliable cars with fool-proof mechanics (provided they are well-maintained, that is).
The engine does indeed come from VW/Audi, and I believe it was installed in Volkswagen's light truck 'LT' and the 70s version of the Audi 100. However, the Porsche version of the engine is a bit different (e.g. it has fuel injecton) and has higher power output - 125 hp (Here in Europe, a bit less in the U.S.)
When it comes to performance, a 1982 European 924 has a top speed of 126 mph and goes from 0 to 60 in about 9,5 seconds. Not breathtaking, but sufficient. The real joy of driving a 924 comes from the handling, though. The 924 has excellent handling, mainly due to its perfect weight distribution between front and the rear and its firm suspension.
A lot of parts are completely or partially interchangable between VW/Audi and the 924. These include engine, brakes, clutch, gearbox, driveshafts and some electrical compoents. As a general rule you could say that if a Porsche part breaks it is very expensive, but if a VW/Audi part breaks it is not. Luckily, most (but not all)of the parts that wear or are prone to failure comes from Audi/VW.
Good luck!
