Simple job that turned bad. Bottom line is that I need to drop the under-dash fuse/relay panel to install my fuel pump relay.

I'm resurrecting's my '82 924 NA and decided to replace the fuel pump relay. I've done this before but this time the relay was hard to remove and the relay connector detached from the box. I cannot install the new relay until I can drop the relay box and snap the connector back into the housing. Haynes says that you can "undo the screws holding it in place and lower it away from the bulkhead." Although I liked the Naval reference, I could find only one screw on the lower right and the box only comes partially out of the housing.

I'd greatly appreciate any help or suggestions. Thanks in advance for your input!
- Peter

Once you have the screw out, and pop the RH retaining tab out, you can pull it towards you a bit then slide it to the right - should pop out easily enough.

Thanks Racer - the RH side did come out a bit. I didn't try moving it to the right. Will give your suggestion a try. I need to make it more accessible without ruining my back under the dash!

PS I disconnected the battery ground as a precaution. Any wiring concerns behind the box?

If you haven't already done so, consider removing the steering wheel. It's easy to do and makes accessing the fuse box much easier. Also, bring plenty of light.

To replace the fuel pump relay, I've found it helpful to pull the surrounding relays. You might consider taking a picture or two to help you remember which goes where.

I've also found it helpful to have a plastic tool in the glove box to help pry up the relays. They make these for removing auto trim. If you pull on the relay itself, sometimes the cover will pop off and the relay remains stuck to the relay board.

Thanks Racer & Chuck. The plastic pry bar is something I'll use in the future.
Unfortunately, the fuse box still won't come out with pressure and a pull to the right. It pulls out about 1/2 in from the lower right housing.

Haynes refers to "screws" but I cant find one other than the right corner tab. I will probably remove the taller breakers (taking a picture first). Perhaps this will free the box up enough to repair the socket for the fuel pump relay.

Again, I'd appreciate any advice to help me end this saga. Thanks in advance - Peter

At long last I was able to pull the fuse box out and down so I could plug the fuel pump relay into the loose connector plate.

I had to use some brute force and leverage to pull the box forward. Success came only after I used PAM vegetable oil spray on the wires behind the panel.

Now the fuel pump is working and I can resume troubleshooting the injectors.

Thanks to all who commented. - Peter

Hey Peter, do you happen to have the fuse box diagram for us by any chance? I've found what seems like for the older 924s (pre 82) and newer 944s (84ish and on?)
