Hello everyone,

I've just taken apart the transmission of my car and it does not look great. Some previous owner or shop once chanced the fluid on the transmission, but could not get the fill plug loose, so they thought that it would be a good idea to drill a hole in fill plug so they could still fill the transmission with fluid.

the only problem with this is that you leave quite large metal shavings inside a transmission which left some notable scars on the bearings.

So Ideally I would like to replace all the bearings, But the problem is that 3 of the bearings are ridiculously expensive. The total cost of all the bearings is just shy of 1000 euro's.
The bearings I am talking about are:

016 311 445 +/- 175 euro's (rose passion)
016 311 220 E +/- 230 euro's (rose passion)
016 311 375 B +/- 320 euro's (design911) FAG KHM89440-HM89410
I've got the numbers of the 016 311 375 B bearing and I've found a replacement for just +/- 100 euro's! But I don't think I will be able to find cheaper replacements for the other two. Bearing 016 311 220 E has a special outer race with a lip for the shims. there is no FAG/INA/SKF number on this race, nothing. Bearing 016 311 445 I do not yet dare to remove from the rear most cover. when I looked at PET. there is plate and behind that plate is a circlip, when those are out the bearing can be removed, I think, If anyone has experience with removing this bearing, I would love to hear how you have done it. the inner race of this bearing is also made from two separate parts, with also no number on them.

also, for the adjusting the ring and pinion you need a special tool, VW385, so If anyone in the Netherlands is willing to lend that out let me know.

I'm still debating if I am going to rebuild or just put it back together as used transmission are quite cheap. But restoring a car and then putting back a transmission that has worn out bearings also does not have my preference. I have not been able to find a lot about the transmissions in the 924, most info is on 944 transmissions, which are very similar.

I would love the hear your thoughts on a diy transmission rebuild and if you know anything usefull I would love to hear it, anything helps.

I wouldn’t even go there, the gearboxes are cheap and very quick and easy to swap. They’re cheap because they don’t generally tend to break, supply and demand.

Yes true, they are cheap. But I'm restoring my entire car and putting back a transmission that I know is worn out, is something that worries me a little. And a used gearbox probably is just as bad. If I had the money I wouldn't think about it and just do it, but I do have a budget which is not unlimited, otherwise I would not be doing everything myself. Like painting the car.

Here are some pictures of the dif and one of the bearing, all the bearings look the same. To me it looks like the dif is starting to have pitting, which means it is also done.
