|
|
While I wait to receive the new drums, I've decided to tackle another issue with my little monster: the sloppy shift.
I recorded a video highlighting the key components of the shift to help identify the problem. Initially, I thought the main issue was with the lever on the shifter, and I was about to follow someone's advice to address that. However, my primary concern now is the clearance and play in the bolt that connects the shift lever to the gearbox, shown in the last part of the video. Is that normal?

Is it possible that this spring is missing/bad?

The motion side-to-side you have in the shifter while in Neutral isn't inappropriate... rather when I look at how much slop the shift lever has, I do it in a gear - because the shift selector at the trans won't move, so that isolates the slop to the linkage completely.
It does look like maybe the shift rod, the long one connecting the trans shift selector rod to the shift lever in your hand, has a fair bit of wear in the socket that connects to the hand lever. It should be a nice perfectly round tube to slip over the pin on the side of the hand lever; common occurrence to have this turn into an oval with wear. Replacing the hand lever can help, as the pin on it can get tapered as well, creating more play... but if the long shift rod is oval'ed, you won't completely eliminate it.
Try the side-to-side play in gear, while watching, this should help isolate it. If it's less than 1cm total play, I wouldn't worry too much about it.
As for the spring you reference, #12 in the diagram - anything is possible, but seems to me that would be inside the transmission, so would need to have been opened at some point to be missing... so extremely unlikely. _________________ Vaughan Scott

Thanks a lot. To be sure, are we talking about these two points?

I was talking mainly about the point at the front end - where piece #27 is.
At the rear end, if you have play at the back end of the shift rod where bolt #12 is - I wonder if that bolt was incorrectly replaced?
It's supposed to be a bolt with a tapered end, to securely locate the two shafts together and prevent rotation. In my experience, it's cross-drilled for safety wire too, but I'm honestly not certain that's factory.
However it would be easy to replace it with a flat-end (normal) bolt if it fell out, which could then easily work loose again... which would allow slop like you show.
So it might be worth removing it and seeing if it does in fact have a point on the end or if it looks like an ordinary bolt... might want to replace, or even just get a longer bolt and grind the tip down to a taper...
Edit: Oh, I guess it is drilled from the factory:

The white plastic thing at the gearbox end can become worn and sloppy. The leftmost arrow of “Item 1” in your diagram. |

Thanks all for the feedback, I'll be addressing each different part one by one to see if they improve the shift. _________________ 924 - 79' |

Note that the white plastic piece Raize is referring to isn't available, at least by itself, from Porsche... but aftermarket sources have made some effort to create replacements... I think someone made it in aluminum, can't remember who... only944.com has a short shift kit that replaces it, along with an upgraded shift lever...

I didn't want the shortened shifter throw, but I did get his shift linkage arm to help tighten things up:
