Can anyone who has fitted a Momo hub adapter to their 924 comment about the gap at the rear?

I`m having a small issue fitting a new Momo steering wheel along with the Momo 8010 (VW, 924, 944) hub adapter. The gap on mine between the hub and the stalk switch plate & plastic surround looks 5-6mm (1/4") larger than with the stock hub, so much that the horn ring will not make contact without drastically bending the sweeper arm. It does not look very nice either.

Is that typical or do I have a sus hub, steering shaft or bearing retainer alignment issue?

Here's an adapter on a 924S I recently picked up. I didn't install it so I can't comment on that, but maybe someone else can. As you can see, there is virtually no gap. Someone on pelican had your same issue but the thread never followed up on what the problem was...

I hope that helps!

Definitely a suss hub....must sit close as per Edredas photo.

Make sure the lug casting (activates the indicator) is the same depth as on the original wheel. Checking with mine it's c 13mm deep, and around 17mm wide.
Otherwise, is centre splined hole the right diameter?

Thank you Edredas for your time to take the photo. It does indeed help, and I wish mine fitted as close.

Pete thanks, measurements are very similar. Hole & splines appear OK too, and holding back with the BFH or lathe.

Still measuring & checking FSM trying to get my head around it and also over the headache from being ass up under the dash. Think it is looking more like an issue with the relative steering shaft and/or outer tube and/or bearing position. Will update later, unlike that useless thread elsewhere.

No problem! I hope you got it figured out! I decided to install this wheel in one of my other 924S' just to try it out. The hub adapter didn't fit as snug as it did in that other car but worked fine otherwise. Looks like there's about a 1.5 or 2mm gap on this car.

Not to go change the subject, but what wheel are you using? I would be interested in see others aftermarket steering wheels. The wheel I have is a Momo Corse Pilota 2. I've been trying to find out where 'corse' series falls in momo's lineup? Anyone have any idea? Is this their low-end stuff? Anyway, its a very nice wheel and I'm happy with it but I can't find much on it.

Yes, thanks. I did eventually get it fitting closer.
Maybe .5mm too close as it now appears to interfere with the high beam flasher stalk. High beam intermittently flashes on, is touching the plastic surround of the horn ring. Appears that .5 on the 42.5mm protrusion makes the difference. Will recheck, measure and confirm over the weekend.

Guess you saw on the Pelican post as now that I looked at your reply, I can not see my last post here, like it vanished. WTF??? I basically copied the other one I made earlier in the day but needed to upload the pics and link here. I`m positive I posted it and saw it up here the other night. Maybe that's when I got PM and became distracted, IDK, not sure what happened. I`ll repost what was kind of the solution again then, have to copy from Pelican.

Also saw on Pelican`s site they listed an obsolete Momo Part number specifically for the 924S. No Idea of any difference or which one you have, or if the 8010 became their generic part.

Your wheel looks nice. I didn`t find much information on the Momo site regarding steering wheels except basic pictures and some sizes. I was specifically looking for a 350mm wheel and bought via ebay what was described as a genuine Momo Tuner leather .... Counterfeit crap! from Europe too, not from China. Two months later I get my money back via Paypal and this free Momo knock off wheel as well. It feels very good and comfortable and doesn't`t look that bad at all, but I`m kinda embarrassed to post a picture on the internet.

The hub I believe was genuine but the bloody fake horn button was also completely different and wouldn't fit the Momo retainer plate by like 5mm. Can`t even see a picture of a real horn button on Momo`s site so not real useful and no prices of course.

After some frustration and head scratching, I'm happy to post that I've had some success and share the solution, at least in my particular case.

Although there`s always the possibly of some manufacturing / QC tolerance at the Momo factory, the problem was resolved by some adjustment to the FSM specs.

I think that with age, wear and POs etc, the plastic bush (#15, 3mm flange) and sleeve (#12, 31.5mm) become compressed and/or out of adjustment relative to the bearing (8mm) fixed in the aluminium housing. This also has some fore/ aft adjustment as does the whole tube (20), retained by the sheer bolts (eighteen) as originally fitted.

It is the correct length of spacer sleeve and the specified 42.5mm in FSM that determines the hub`s relative position. The steering shaft measured 86.5mm from end face to the larger diameter face.
86.5-3-8-31.5=44-42.5=1.5mm
I placed a 2mm washer over the shaft, behind the bush (15) to arrive at 42 mm of protruding shaft, and then adjust the bearing carrier further forward. Now there is only about a 2mm gap and all is well.

Two days but only one good run later it appears that the dimension is rather critical. Thought I was being smart by reducing the clearance a miserable 0.5mm as the shaft protrusion was pretty close to 42mm. Initial test run to mainly check spline alignment went well. However during a 50 Km cross city run today the high beam lights intermittently turned on and off quite a few times. It takes a second or two for a forward flash action before the stalk springs back. The hub`s horn ring definitely appears to be interfering with the switch plate mechanism. To be continued ...

Back to the question on which type... I got a good deal on a Momo Monte Carlo way back when we built our racecar... still there, has held up very well to almost 2 decades of racing... of course, in our case it's on a quick-release, but here's a pic anyway...

RC,if you need any detailed pics of the horn button and plate I'll be glad to take some. I can understand your frustration, I wasn't going to be surprised if someone told me that mine was a fake momo.

I never drove that other 924S to see if there was any issues with the hub being that close, but that thing was on there tight.

924racer, that's one heck of a durable steering wheel to take 20 years of abuse. I ran one of my 924S' without power steering for a while and the stock steering wheel fatigued and broke. I'm thinking about putting this momo in that car. It seems really strong, but that said, I don't plan on the power steering going out again...

I wonder if we started an aftermarket steering wheel thread in the body and interior section we could get some input. I'm always looking for a nice steering wheel and I'd rather pay $150 for a nice looking used momo than a premium for a stock wheel...

Mmmm, not a bad idea... I have been wanting to pick up a replacement Momo wheel or similar for my street Turbo (stock 3-spoke)... have a hub and button, but haven't rounded up a wheel yet.

Definite preference for Momo Prototipo or similar - very classic look.

924RACR That is indeed a durable wheel, leather and stitching especially. Surprising how good it looks after 20 years of racing, the quality speaks.

edredas, From watching your video and looking at other horn buttons on ebay it obvious how my fake is so different it will never fit through that plate as it should, like yours does.
No patience or incentive to order a proper one for a fake wheel. Had to make up an earth lug to fit over 16mm shaft to ground it and use the non genuine cover plate supplied to retain the thing so I can legally drive it.

Heres a few crappy phone pics showing the gap which is about 3mm 1/8" now, but the horn ring has a concentric gouge in it where it was scraping the switch mechanism, so something clearly is not right still.

The likely suspect now is the black plastic spacer bush, #12 in the diagram a few posts up. The one I have measures 31.5mm or just under 1 1/4", but I don`t know how long it should be when new. I think it is quite likely it has been compressed over the years, is shorter than it should be, or is actually compressing somewhat when the wheel nut is torqued up. I am turning up a non-compressible steel version to try.

I would appreciate if anyone who has one of these in a newish condition could measure and post the overall length.
Thanks

Thank you again Harm, poster of so much fully useful information.

Looks like mine is 1mm TOO SHORT.
Back to the garage....

but I have a similar spacing problem with the 8010 momo adapter on my early (square dash) 944 of about 1/4" at least between the back of the adapter and the trim around the steering stalk. From what I can figure the steering shaft itself is too far extended towards the driver and I am guessing by drilling the two sheer bolts that hold the shaft in the sleeve I may be able to recess it more towards the instrument cluster side and tighten the gap? The adapter is bottomed out on the tapered steering shaft so it is not a problem of the plastic spacer bushing that is causing the spacing issue I am seeing. I asked this question on RL and a FB group but no one really seemed to have any experience with this problem or answers.
