EVENIN LADS|LASSES

HERE IS THE INITIAL ASSESMENT OF THE NEW TO ME 1982 931.
PREVIOUS OWNER COMPLAINED OF OVERHEATING BUT WAS A "RUNS AND DRIVES"

CAR HAS 96,000 MILES ON IT [NOT LIKELY]
INTERIOR IS IN GREAT SHAPE ASIDE FROM THE USUAL WEAR SPOTS FOR 40+
SOME GAUGES ARE OUT OR NOT FUNCTIONING. SOME OF THE SMALLER SWITCHES MISSING.
CAR WAS REPAINTED IN '96 AND STILL LOOKS GOOD.

PREVIOUS OWNER WAS SECOND OWNER AND HAS EXTENSIVE RECORDS FROM '96 WHEN HE AQCUIRED THE CAR UP UNTIL LAST SERVICE IN 2/2022.

THERE ARE SOME PHANTOM BYPASS SWITCHES BUILT INTO THE DASH AND HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THAT WOULD BE OR WHERE IT LEADS TO....

SO, THE ENGINE...
AFTER GOING THROUGH IT [AS BEST I KNOW HOW FROM ALL THE INFO HERE]
TRIED COLD STARTING IT AND I CAN HEAR THE FUEL PUMP COME ON, THE CAR CRANKS FIRST COUPLE OF TRIES BUT NOTHING....
SECOND CRANK AND NOTHING. NOT EXACTLY A RUNS AND DRIVES...
OK
I AM AWARE OF THE OBVIOUS TIMING BELT AND WATER PUMP THEY ARE ON TOP OF THE LIST.
ALSO LOOKED AT THE FUEL PUMP IN THE BACK PASSENGER AREA AND IT IS THE OG PUMP. LOOKS LIKE IT WAS SPRAY FOAM FIRE PROTECTED BECAUSE I COULD BARELY IDENTIFY IT.
MOVING FORWARD...
I POKED AROUND AND THE WATER COOLING EXPANSION TANK IS MELTED AND MISSHAPEN. AND THE LID IS CRACKED WITH A HOLE RIGHT THROUGH IT. OVERHEATING PROBLEM?

SO FOLLOWING THE TRAIL TO THE AIR CLEANER SYSTEM THEN BECAUSE THE LINES RIGHT NEXT TO THE EXPANSION TANK WERE ALL RUSTED. SO AIR FILTER WAS DIRTY [REPLACEMENT REQUIRED] BUT THE HOSE THAT GOES TO THE OIL SPERATOR AND THE OIL SEPERATOR ITSELF HAD NO LID BECAUSE IT HAD COME OFF AND LAYING NEXT TO IT. YIKES.

THAT MADE ME THINK [BIG MISTAKE] TO LOOK UNDER THE CAR THEN. IT HAS BEEN IN MY GARAGE 24 HRS AND SURE ENOUGH... OIL ON THE GARAGE FLOOR. SCHEISSE! I MEAN FOR A CAR THAT "RUNS AND DRIVES" BUT DOES NOT RUN IT LOOKS LIKE THE ENGINE TOOK A BATH IN CAKED OIL.

SO MOST OIL IS OLD AND CRUSTED. THE ENTIRE CROSSMEMBER LOOKS LIKE IS HAS A BLACK FUZZ ALL OVER IT. THE ONLY NEW OIL I COULD SEE WAS COMING OUT OF THE OIL PUMP AT THE BOTTOM [SEE PHOTO WITH RED ARROW] I THINK ITS THE OIL PUMP.

FINALLY, WHAT I KNOW ABOUT CARS IS THEY HAVE 4 WHEELS AND THATS ABOUT IT. I AM A LONG TIME ENTHUSIAST OF THE BRAND AND FIRST TIME OWNER. I HAVE BOUGHT AND SOLD A FEW 944S BUT NEVER WORKED ON ONE MYSELF.

WELL, WHAT DO YOU THINK!
ANY AND ALL FEEDBACK IS GREATLY APPRECIATED.
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE.

PICS ARE ATTACHED IN REPLY.

I think a good cleanup of the engine would be a good start to isolate the oil leaks and asses the general condition, could be the oil seal on the front of the crank aswell, or multiple oil leaks.

The lid on the air/oil separator shouldnt be removable, i wonder if someone fettled with it previously.

Do you have the manuals btw, theres lots to read in there ?

Would be nice if you let of the caps lock button, it makes it a bit challenging to read

First up...a good pressure wash of the engine/bay/underneath to determine where your probable multi oil leaks are coming from.
Then a step by step diagnosis of problems.
I hope you're in for the long haul.

Thank you for any and all responses.

14 degrees here currently so doing my best to diagnose without a pressure washer to hook up is the best I can do.

I do have all the required manuals and readings for the adventure.

The long haul is the fun part.

Fixing broken parts and oil leak identification is the first chapter before I can even start with the "why it won't start" procedures.

Remove any sprayfoam, it does nothing good.

If the expansion tank is cracked it will "overheat" since the system requires to be sealed.

Also get the engine cleaned from all oil and crud... Fire hassard and makes diagnosis impossible, also its not very fun to work something that dirty.
Its horrible enough to work on a 931 without oil on everthing.

UPDATE 1/23/24

Was able to repair the Oil Reservoir. Replacing the hoses and hose clamps. removing the bracket and painting.

discovery leads to discovery!
None of the tank ventilation hoses were even attached to the Carbon canister in the wheel well. They were also cracked and will need to be replaced with canister before anything else.

Also the water cooling expansion tank is NLA from what I can see. Any thoughts or suggestions other than FB or this board?

and finally can someone take a pic of there windshield crossmember, Part# 944-502-079-00. Looks like mine is missing and there is nothing stopping rain and snow from getting to the engine bay.

Thanks

Expansion tank:

Not a perfect fit, but close enough, and much better construction than the converted milk jug from Porsche.

Yeah, I pulled my stock 931 exp tank and replaced with the 944 tank; frees up a good bit of space too!
