Hi guys, i have the engine out of my project '79na and am enjoying the process of stripping/restoring/rebuilding all the ancillaries starter/alternator pumps etc before tackling the lump itself.

my question is as this is my first time working on an engine out of the car would someone be kind enough to list for me the various obvious seals and gaskets they would replace in what i guess is a refresh? rear main seal/cam shaft seal etc. she leaks badly

As yet im not sure how far i want to go as its a learning curve so any other advice gratefully received.

Definitely oil pan and head gasket; the latter due to leaking, the former as they so often go, and it'll give you a chance to clean off the valves, re-lap them for best sealing, and install new valve stem seals. Relatively simple once the engine's out.

Front and rear main are also NBD once it's out, and all the lot will be captured by a complete upper and lower engine gasket sets. Valve cover gasket will come along with the kits as well.

If you can get a leakdown test on the motor before you remove the head, however, you can see if maybe you also want to consider piston rings... you need to pull the head and pan to get to them, so it's definitely a might-as-well.

Main bearings tend to last, but rod bearings could be a wise investment if you end up doing rings. Of course, if you do go this route - you'll have a fresh motor!
