I have gone through the FAQ page and maybe I am an idiot (most likely) but I cannot figure out how to get around that big metal box that is right below the dashboard to unhook things. Am I missing something stupid? Do I need to remove it? I am not seeing an easy way to get it out of there.

I went through this process when I installed my new dashboard. You have to come at it from the top and the bottom.

This page explains how to remove the ignition switch for an early 944.
The 931 is similar. I believe the big metal box you are referring to is for the OXS system....hanging under the dash in the pic below.

Also see this page...the first six or seven steps.

Also this thread

You don't have to remove the instrument cluster. So that's the good news.

The OXS box is held in place by 2 or 3 bolts. You can remove those and let the unit hang down rather than disconnecting it. (Support the weight so that it's not hanging by the wires...I had mine propped up against the clutch pedal)

Per the instructions above you have to remove the steering wheel, turn signals/wiper control and more to get to the ignition switch.

There are three connections on the back to wiggle loose. One for the ignition switch, the others go to the turn signal stalk/wipers.

The ignition switch and assembly comes out as a unit

Then you can replace the switch (which is different than the lock cylinder part)

re: a little deeper under the dash

Yes. You might even have to stand on your head with your feet up in the air. Bring plenty of light.

Good luck.
