Hi all. Been lurking around the forum a few weeks and finding some helpful info on the threads and as a first time Porsche owner thought I would sign up and introduce myself as I will have some questions to come

My name is Martyn. Car enthusiast as I expect we all are here. Love Jap and German cars mainly, having owned a couple BMW Z3s and a Skyline at one point, currently owning a Nissan 350z as my every day car I’ve been wanting to buy a classic / little bit of a project for weekend and pleasure use

I’ve been eyeing up the Porsche 944’s for a few years, was going to buy one off a friend that unfortunately he has left to rot on his drive for the past 7 years but he wants too much for it considering the amount of work it needs unfortunately. Then I came across this 924s and other than a faded bonnet and a faded roof with a bit of work needed here and there she seems mechanically sound, not much rust considering the age (little bit near front passenger sill and looks to be some hiding behind the driver side rear spat) but I’m in love with it. It’s listed as black but it’s almost a slate black, whatever it is I really like the colour and would like to restore it to the same if it turns out it is a factory colour

Thanks in advance for any future help with my questions / car niggles to come !

First one is, does anyone recommend any preventative work / checks to start with?

Greetings!

Do you know the service history on the car? If the timing belt is of unknown age, you should plan on replacing soon. . .a great way to drive into the 2.5 platform.

Thanks for the welcome guys and the advice on thing to check for first definitely appreciated

I have some history for the vehicle, There is a receipt from Dec 05 (about 35k miles ago) with :
-Timing belt
-Balance belt
-Timing belt pulley
-Roller pulley
-Roller
-Balance belt pulley
...Also Clutch Kit for £343

Would you recommend doing again? It does have a funny start sometimes. Sometimes it starts up fast and easy. Sometimes it struggles but then starts. It’s started every-time and once it’s going it idles perfect just sometimes has a strange lag to start, not sure how to explain it

16 years ago? If it were me I'd park it and start ordering parts.

Yep have done, it’s not my daily. Going to service it, flush the radiator etc as well before I start using it for weekend cruising.

Any other preventatives to look at as a priority ?

Thanks for the advice

With a 15 year old timing belt it’s seriously a time bomb..
I wouldn’t even start it at all..

Thanks for that. Just had a look, sadly looks like it’s US only, I’m in the UK. Have found this kit though https://www.design911.co.uk/fu/pt178_237_-cma81-cmo83-ct323/Porsche/924-1977-88/924S-2-5L-1986-87/Belts-for-Alternator--Fan--Power-steering-etc-/#3212

That belt kit looks great.

Here's the seal kit:

You also need this:

This:

This:

You should also replace water pump and thermostat.

Are you doing this yourself? There are a few special tools as well, like a flywheel lock, some special thin spanners and a tensioning tool.

Brill thank you for your help! Tbh I’m going to take it to my local mechanic. Usually do things I can myself but with something as important as belts I don’t want to risk making a mistake

K, just make sure this isn't the first one they've done...there are a few tricks and things easily overlooked in this job.

Will do, I gave him a call a couple days ago checked it would be something he would feel comfortable working on and he was quite enthusiastic as he used to have one so should be in good hands. But if you’re willing to provide a little tips list I will give him a heads up

Thanks again

Everything needed is here:

http://www.clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/repair-procedure-index4.htm

If you are committed to the car, you should consider resealing the balance shaft housings and oil cooler housing as well. The latter is especially important because a failure here could lead to bearing damage.

These motors can be quite leaky, and it is best to get them sealed up well. Once done, you should be good for 100k miles.
