Hi.
I got a 924s in from a friend who got new water pump, main belt, balance belt done 10km ago.
When he drove the car home from the workshop that did the service, the car was running hot and some strange noises came from the belts(how the owner explained it).
I tried to turn the engine over by hand - no problem, then startet it and the the sound from the belts was not normal.
I took the belt cowers of, and saw that the balance belt was too loose, so it touch the water pump pulley( maybe the souce fro the sounds?)
But there where some discoloration on the water pump pulley where the main belt drives. and som rubber debris/ rubber smeared on the pulley. So the waterpump was not runnng at some point(new pump, only 10-15 km on it). and i think it is more likely the souce for the strage noises.
But now I can turn the engine over by hand and the water pump turns fine??
Any ideas ? except pulling the water pump and look for damage/ or lost bolt/nuts in there?
Thanks. _________________ 76 924 (PARTS)

Can you give a better description of the noise. Is it whining, squealing, banging? _________________ 1988 porsche 924s

Van Svenson has a 3 part video about changing the belts and the water pump. Its on a turbo but the process is the same. It shows everything you will ever need to know in this area. see attached link.

The noise is more a squealing kind of noise.
I will take the waterpump of tomorrow and see what could cause the problem, I am sure the impeller on the waterpump was stuck somehow and then the belt just turned over the waterpump pulley without turning it around. _________________ 76 924 (PARTS)

Yes. The balance shaft belt was way too loose and had jumped.
The loose belt toucjed the waterpump pulley and made the noises.
The overheating issue was the thermostat not working - I dont know why the workshop havent tested/changed the thermostat, when the owner told them is was overheating.
I hope that where the problems, I am going to put it all back together to day. _________________ 76 924 (PARTS)
