History

this spring

removed engine
rear main seal
clutch
oil pan gasket
A/C removal pump

summer
head gasket blew and replaced with valve guides, valve cover gasket and valve clearance reset

new battery and rebuilt known good alternator along with new alternator mounting bushings.

Symptom.
charging at 12.6 at idle voltmeter on battery and on gauge in car.
with all accessories on it dips to 11.4 (heater fan, rear window fog, LED headlights and fog). turn signals make it really dip.
Engine temp gauge climbs quickly while the charging is at 12.6v-11.4v but the fans do not turn on. pegs out at HOT
oil pressure is Normal in all instances on gauge. It charged normally before I started the clutch/head gasket. It would charge intermittenly with normal temp setting. (the reason to check Alt and Battery Issue)

I've checked the connection to the temp sensor on back of head and it is connected.
driver fan worked when jumped at radiator fan switch albeit noisy at start.
Passenger side worked quietly with battery jump
open circuit on radiator fan switch when cold.
fans did not come on when i turned on the A/C. (normally do)

Please ask questions for more clues.

I don't understand your suggestion....

I'm going to pull my starter/alt/battery cable and inspect.
thanks

What is the condition of the ground wire from the alternator to the block?

What is the condition of the ground wire from the body to the block?

First clean the grounds as Paul said. The cable connection ends have been know to get internal corrosion which you can't see, both positive and ground leads. Try running a booster cable jumper from the starter to battery and also from alternator to battery. Then do same on ground side.

I replaced this cable with a new cable a few years ago and I have no reason to believe it to be bad. I am going check it again because of OCD

while I replaced the above cable. I added an extra grounding cable from Engine to Body.

I'm going to put in a replacement battery to body.

OCD

I pulled off the harness and inspected it. Other than a few repairs from P.O. I put shrink tubing on the breaks and put on new connectors. Reinstall should be in the morning.

********************** It took a few days, but I took out the starter/Alt harness and checked all of the connections and the wires. replaced the ones that I suspected might not be in order. replaced it and road tested ...... started out great 13.3 on the gauge temp was great too and I rigged up a Mulitmeter in the windshield. All good. then I drove into my driveway and it went to 12.2 and temp gauge went to the max.

Back to square one.

I think Ill start it, wait for it to do it again and then start taking fuses out until I see something different.

still looking for other input..... thanks guys!

changed out the ignition switch..... Great success!! so far... time will tell.

1 thing I will say is that when taking off the ignition switch housing is that when you heat up the plastic collar that holds it in with a hair dryer and massage it with a bit of nut blaster, a vice grip will wiggle it off..... easy peasy.

It's the grounding wires. changed the -Battery cable to body. no change. then added a cable from Bat to body hook up directly to the Valve cover bolts.

Great SUCCESS!! 14.2v everywhere!
with the stereo, heater fan, headlights, Foglights and rear defrost I had 13.5v very acceptable.

I think that the body to engine ground location is a weak point.

Happy motoring!!!
