From my 924na/83 the heater core is dripping cooling liquid when hot (higher pression) at the in/output where the hoses are connected.
When cold there is no liquid visable.
The car is just coming out of a "bare metal restoration" and the core has been cleaned/checked before fitting in the heater housing.
Is this a known problem and can I remove the core without demounting the whole heater unit?
Haynes is telling me that it is possible, but looking underneath the dash, the bottom of the battery location is in its way and it seems that you cannot slide the core out completely.
Anyone ever done this or can confirm how to remove the core?
Thanks

The heater core slides out without any problems. Done this on both types of heaters. _________________ WBR, Shurick

Yes, it is a common failure mode (leaking core)
You should be able to slide the core out once you've disconnected the two heater hoses.
Any competent radiator shop should be able to re-test (and potentially) repair the core. New cores are NLA. Make sure it's not the heater hoses. I saw one that got pinched on engine installation, causing a pinhole leak. It didn't leak into the cockpit, and that double grommet is supposed to prevent it, but anything is possible. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

That may not be the right core for your car. Which heater controls do you have? The original 2.0L or the improved unit from the 944? I see your car is 1983 model. The listing indicates compatibility with 85-onward. Not sure in Europe, but in US the change happened with very late-run 1982 models, so it may be ok, just double check before ordering. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |
