First post on this remarkable forum. I have a 1981 NA 924 that I am attempting to sort out. Through a slight misadventure I managed to break the connector to the Hall sensor on the distributor. I was unable to remove the metal rotor on the distributor shaft while it was in the car, so I pulled the unit while the system was at TDC. I was still unable to remove the metal rotor but I was able to repair the plug. So it is back in the car and the car is running again, finally. (But that is another story) With the timing light at idle the mark on the cam is very close to the pointer, so that is good. My question is this; when I increase the revs above idle while using the timing light shouldn't the timing mark on the cam advance a reasonable amount? When I increase the revs the mark moves about 1/2" or 12 mm. Wouldn't 35 degrees of spark advance move the mark more than that?

When the distributor cap is off you can manually move the rotor a small amount so it would seem the mechanical advance works, and if you apply vacuum to the diaphragm the rotor move, so it would seem the vacuum advance works.

The car runs like crap because there are fuel problems as well.

Any thoughts on this?

Cam pulley rotates once for every two crank rotations. You should be using the TDC mark on the crank pulley or flywheel.

Also, pop for an adjustable timing light, so you can see how many degrees it is actually advancing.

A buddy of mine has an adjustable light and I will use it this weekend.
I don't see how you can use the mark on the flywheel, I can get the timing light to shine on it or I can see the mark window. I can't seem to do both at the same time. We will see if his light works better than mine.

It is moderately inconvenient.
